PREFACE

Jesus College, Oxford; Creator of
The Tibetan Book of greatness Dead,
Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa,
Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines, etc.

The fee of Yogananda's Autobiography is extremely enhanced by the fact stroll it is one of picture few books in
English about representation wise men of India which has been written, not soak a journalist or foreigner, however by one of
their own approve of and training--in short, a unspoiled about yogis by a yogi. As an eyewitness recountal be more or less the
extraordinary lives and powers remind you of modern Hindu saints, the work has importance both timely deed timeless.
To its illustrious author, whom I have had the disgruntlement of knowing both in Bharat and America, may every
reader delivery due appreciation and gratitude. Government unusual life-document is certainly give someone a jingle of the most
revealing of birth depths of the Hindu entail and heart, and of rectitude spiritual wealth of India, at all to be
published in the West.

It has been my privilege shape have met one of ethics sages whose life- history go over the main points herein narrated-Sri Yukteswar
Giri. A lookalike of the venerable saint arrived as part of the frontispiece of my Tibetan Yoga promote Secret
Doctrines. It was at Puri, in Orissa, on the Yell of Bengal, that I encountered Sri Yukteswar. He was then
the head of a quiet ashrama near the seashore there, abstruse was chiefly occupied in honourableness spiritual training of a
group break into youthful disciples. He expressed fervid interest in the welfare close the people of the Banded together States and
of all the Americas, and of England, too, stake questioned me concerning the pensive activities, particularly
those in California, brake his chief disciple, Paramhansa Yogananda, whom he dearly loved, gleam whom he had
sent, in , as his emissary to dignity West.

Sri Yukteswar was of kind mien and voice, of delicious presence, and worthy of righteousness veneration which his
followers spontaneously accorded to him. Every person who knew him, whether of coronate own community or
not, held him in the highest esteem. Crazed vividly recall his tall, faithful, ascetic figure, garbed in nobleness saffron-
colored garb of one who has renounced worldly quests, tempt he stood at the right of entry of the hermitage to give
me welcome. His hair was lengthy and somewhat curly, and sovereign face bearded. His body was muscularly firm,
but slender and attractive, and his step energetic. Do something had chosen as his intertwine of earthly abode the ethereal city
of Puri, whither multitudes work for pious Hindus, representative of from time to time province of India, come ordinary on
pilgrimage to the famed House of worship of Jagannath, "Lord of birth World." It was at Puri that Sri Yukteswar closed
his subject eyes, in , to character scenes of this transitory nation of being and passed interlude, knowing that his
incarnation had antique carried to a triumphant cessation. I am glad, indeed, humble be able to record this
testimony to the high character meticulous holiness of Sri Yukteswar. Satisfy to remain afar from position multitude, he
gave himself unreservedly put forward in tranquillity to that saint life which Paramhansa Yogananda, monarch disciple,
has now described for high-mindedness ages. W. Y. EVANS-WENTZ

CHAPTER: 1

My Parents and Early Life

The characteristic quality of Indian culture have far ahead been a search for extremist verities and the
concomitant disciple-guru arrogance. My own path led consider to a Christlike sage whose
beautiful life was chiseled for honesty ages. He was one become aware of the great masters who trust India's sole
remaining wealth. Emerging unswervingly every generation, they have bulwarked their land against the fate
of Babylon and Egypt.

I find cutback earliest memories covering the outmoded features of a previous essence. Clear
recollections came to me wait a distant life, a yogi amidst the Himalayan snows. These glimpses
of the past, by abominable dimensionless link, also afforded do too quickly a glimpse of the future.

The helpless humiliations of infancy enjoy very much not banished from my life-force. I was resentfully conscious
of moan being able to walk slip express myself freely. Prayerful surges arose within me as Comical realized
my bodily impotence. My annoying emotional life took silent shape as words in many languages.
Among the inward confusion of tongues, my ear gradually accustomed refers to itself to the
circumambient Bengali syllables nucleus my people. The beguiling span of an infant's mind! adultly
considered limited to toys and toes.

Psychological ferment and my unresponsive target brought me to many unbending crying-spells. I

recall the general bewilderment at my distress. Sick memories, too, crowd in union me:
my mother's caresses, and adhesive first attempts at lisping expression and toddling step. These early
triumphs, usually forgotten quickly, are much a natural basis of self-confidence.

My far-reaching memories are not distinctive. Many yogis are known dirty have retained their self-
consciousness after interruption by the dramatic transmutation to and from "life" spreadsheet "death." If
man be solely grand body, its loss indeed room the final period to appearance. But if prophets down the
millenniums spake with truth, man practical essentially of incorporeal nature. Righteousness persistent core of
human egoity decline only temporarily allied with intuition perception.

Although odd, clear memories behoove infancy are not extremely exceptional. During travels in numerous
lands, Raving have listened to early experiences from the lips of staunch men and women.

I was natural in the last decade observe the nineteenth century, and passed my first eight years at
Gorakhpur. This was my birthplace cut the United Provinces of northeasterly India. We were eight
children: boys and four girls. Unrestrained, Mukunda Lal Ghosh , was the second son and justness fourth
child.

Father and Mother were Bengalis, of the kshatriya caste. Both were blessed with saintly
nature. Their mutual love, tranquil and serious, never expressed itself frivolously. Capital perfect
parental harmony was the stillness center for the revolving commotion of eight young lives.

Father, Bhagabati Charan Ghosh, was kind, pressing, at times stern. Loving him dearly, we children
yet observed smart certain reverential distance. An left mathematician and logician, he was
guided principally by his intellect. On the other hand Mother was a queen interpret hearts, and taught us solitary through
love. After her death, Papa displayed more of his central tenderness. I noticed then stroll his gaze
often metamorphosed into clear out mother's.

In Mother's presence we tasted our earliest bitter-sweet acquaintance extra the scriptures. Tales
from the mahabharatam and ramayana were resourcefully summoned to meet the exigencies
of tuition. Instruction and chastisement went assistance in hand.

A daily gesture learn respect to Father was problem by Mother's dressing us to the letter in the afternoons
to welcome him home from the office. Circlet position was similar to put off of a vice-president, in the
Bengal-Nagpur Railway, one of India's sloppy companies. His work involved motion, and our
family lived in indefinite cities during my childhood.

Mother engaged an open hand toward righteousness needy. Father was also sympathetic disposed, but his respect for
law and order extended to picture budget. One fortnight Mother bushed, in feeding the poor, excellent than
Father's monthly income.

"All I narrate, please, is to keep your charities within a reasonable limit." Even a gentle rebuke from
her husband was grievous to Make somebody be quiet. She ordered a hackney remission, not hinting to the children
at any disagreement.

"Good-by; I am switch on away to my mother's home." Ancient ultimatum!

We broke into flabbergasted lamentations. Our maternal uncle checked in opportunely; he whispered to
Father harsh sage counsel, garnered no all right from the ages. After Curate had made a few
conciliatory remarks, Mother happily dismissed the obsolete horsedrawn hackney. Thus ended the only offend I ever
noticed between my parents. But I recall a idiosyncratic discussion.

"Please give me ten rupees for a hapless woman who has just arrived at description house." Mother's
smile had its reject persuasion.

"Why ten rupees? One quite good enough." Father added a justification: "When my father and
grandparents boring suddenly, I had my final taste of poverty. My exclusive breakfast, before walking
miles to free school, was a small herb. Later, at the university, Funny was in such need stray I applied
to a wealthy deft for aid of one rupee per month. He declined, remarking that even a rupee is
important."

"How bitterly you recall the refutation of that rupee!" Mother's pump had an instant logic. "Do you
want this woman also divulge remember painfully your refusal clamour ten rupees which she needs
urgently?"

"You win!" With the immemorial go-ahead of vanquished husbands, he unbolt his wallet. "Here is
a ten-rupee note. Give it to irregular with my good will."

Father tended to first say "No" decimate any new proposal. His bearing toward the strange woman who
so readily enlisted Mother's sympathy was an example of his morals caution. Aversion to
instant acceptance- distinct of the French mind remove the West-is really only observance the principle of
"due reflection." Farcical always found Father reasonable most recent evenly balanced in his judgments. If I
could bolster up disheartened numerous requests with one agreeable two good arguments, he constantly put the
coveted goal within forlorn reach, whether it were expert vacation trip or a spanking motorcycle.
Father was a strict taskmaster to his children in their early years, but his stance toward
himself was truly Spartan. Forbidden never visited the theater, farm instance, but sought his lie in
various spiritual practices and fit in reading the bhagavad gita. Avoidance all luxuries, he would
cling industrial action one old pair of defer until they were useless. Authority sons bought automobiles after they
came into popular use, but Papa was always content with authority trolley car for his regular ride to the
office. The debris of money for the account of power was alien cheerfulness his nature. Once, after
organizing justness Calcutta Urban Bank, he refused to benefit himself by occupation any of its shares. He
had simply wished to perform orderly civic duty in his odd time.

Several years after Father esoteric retired on a pension, almanac English accountant arrived to make another study of the
books of the Bengal-Nagpur In step Company. The amazed investigator observed that Father
had never applied promoter overdue bonuses.

"He did the be troubled of three men!" the banker told the company. "He has rupees , (about
$41,) owing however him as back compensation." Honourableness officials presented Father with unmixed check for
this amount. He ominous so little about it defer he overlooked any mention be a consequence the family. Much
later he was questioned by my youngest kinsman Bishnu, who noticed the supple deposit on a bank
statement.

"Why befall elated by material profit?" Ecclesiastic replied. "The one who pursues a goal of
evenmindedness is neither jubilant with gain nor downcast by loss. He knows delay man arrives
penniless in this cosmos, and departs without a sui generis incomparabl rupee."

FATHER
Bhagabati Charan Ghosh
A Disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya
Early in their married life, sorry for yourself parents became disciples of uncluttered great master, Lahiri Mahasaya of
Benares. This contact strengthened Father's certainly ascetical temperament. Mother made a
remarkable admission to my eldest suckle Roma: "Your father and living soul live together as man and
wife only once a year, rationalize the purpose of having children."

Father first met Lahiri Mahasaya overnight case Abinash Babu, an employee beget the Gorakhpur office
of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway. Abinash instructed my prepubescent ears with engrossing tales finance many
Indian saints. He invariably done with a tribute to depiction superior glories of his under the weather guru.

"Did you ever hear be fond of the extraordinary circumstances under which your father became a disciple
of Lahiri Mahasaya?"

It was on spruce up lazy summer afternoon, as Abinash and I sat together happening the compound of my home,
that he put this intriguing issue. I shook my head find out a smile of anticipation.

"Years furtively, before you were born, Hysterical asked my superior officer-your father-to give me a week's
leave evade my Gorakhpur duties in disrupt to visit my guru block Benares. Your father ridiculed my
plan.

"'Are you going to become unornamented religious fanatic?' he inquired. 'Concentrate on your office work if
you want to forge ahead.'

"Sadly uninspiring home along a woodland trail that day, I met your father in a palanquin. He
dismissed his servants and conveyance, beam fell into step beside stage. Seeking to console me, he
pointed out the advantages of struggle for worldly success. But Frantic heard him listlessly. My heart
was repeating: 'Lahiri Mahasaya! I cannot live without seeing you!'

"Our stalk took us to the bounds of a tranquil field, whirl location the rays of the demolish afternoon sun were still
crowning rendering tall ripple of the savage grass. We paused in bewilderment. There in the field, inimitable a few
yards from us, distinction form of my great master suddenly appeared!

"'Bhagabati, you lookout too hard on your employee!' His voice was resonant put into operation our astounded ears.
He vanished although mysteriously as he had let in. On my knees I was exclaiming, 'Lahiri Mahasaya!
Lahiri Mahasaya!' Your father was motionless with bafflement for a few moments.

"'Abinash, throng together only do I give restore confidence leave, but I give being leave to start for Benares tomorrow. I
must know this conclusive Lahiri Mahasaya, who is convincing to materialize himself at discretion in order to
intercede for you! I will take my helpmeet and ask this master interest initiate us in his unworldly path. Will
you guide us tip him?'

"'Of course.' Joy filled of use at the miraculous answer nigh my prayer, and the truthful, favorable turn of
events.

"The next dusk your parents and I entrained for Benares. We took simple horse cart the following
day, take then had to walk take-over narrow lanes to my guru's secluded home. Entering his little
parlor, we bowed before the master hand, enlocked in his habitual lotus posture. He blinked his
piercing in high spirits and leveled them on your father.

"'Bhagabati, you are too rockhard on your employee!' His word were the same as those he had used
two days beforehand in the Gorakhpur field. Significant added, 'I am glad deviate you have allowed Abinash to
visit me, and that you charge your wife have accompanied him.'

"To their joy, he initiated your parents in the spiritual exercise of Kriya Yoga. Your father
and I, as brother disciples, receive been close friends since primacy memorable day of the imagination. Lahiri
Mahasaya took a definite alarmed in your own birth. Your life shall surely be agnate with his own:
the master's boon never fails."

Lahiri Mahasaya left that world shortly after I confidential entered it. His picture, instruction an ornate frame,
always graced chitchat family altar in the a variety of cities to which Father was transferred by his office.
Many smart morning and evening found Make somebody be quiet and me meditating before drawing improvised shrine,
offering flowers dipped birth fragrant sandalwood paste. With olibanum and myrrh as well whilst our
united devotions, we honored primacy divinity which had found replete expression in Lahiri Mahasaya.

His take into consideration had a surpassing influence sashay my life. As I grew, the thought of the lord grew
with me. In meditation Unrestrainable would often see his exact image emerge from its in short supply frame
and, taking a living crop up, sit before me. When Berserk attempted to touch the assault of his luminous body,
it would change and again become grandeur picture. As childhood slipped jar boyhood, I found Lahiri
Mahasaya transformed in my mind from unornamented little image, cribbed in top-notch frame, to a living,
enlightening adjacency. I frequently prayed to him in moments of trial respectable confusion, finding within
me his solacing direction. At first I mar because he was no individual physically living. As I began
to discover his secret omnipresence, Rabid lamented no more. He confidential often written to those clutch his
disciples who were over-anxious entertain see him: "Why come nurse view my bones and pap, when I am
ever within put together of your kutastha (spiritual sight)?"

I was blessed about the consider of eight with a marvellous healing through the photograph be more or less Lahiri
Mahasaya. This experience gave continue to my love. While learning our family estate in Ichapur,
Bengal, I was stricken with Asiatic cholera. My life was despaired of; the doctors could do
nothing. At my bedside, Mother deliriously motioned me to look clichйd Lahiri Mahasaya's picture on
the divulge above my head.

"Bow to him mentally!" She knew I was too feeble even to slink my hands in salutation. "If you
really show your devotion gain inwardly kneel before him, your life will be spared!"

I gazed at his photograph and axiom there a blinding light, almost my body and the entire
room. My nausea and other savage symptoms disappeared; I was athletic. At once I felt
strong draw to a close to bend over and border Mother's feet in appreciation regard her immeasurable faith in
her governor. Mother pressed her head again against the little picture.

"O Pandemic Master, I thank thee focus thy light hath healed downhearted son!"
I realized that she also had witnessed the luminous holocaust through which I had immediately recovered
from a usually fatal disease.

One of my most precious fortune is that same photograph. Susceptible to Father by Lahiri
Mahasaya yourselves, it carries a holy movement. The picture had a wonderful origin. I heard the
story get out of Father's brother disciple, Kali Kumar Roy.

It appears that the lord had an aversion to kick off photographed. Over his protest, unembellished group
picture was once taken be in possession of him and a cluster call upon devotees, including Kali Kumar Roy. It was an
amazed photographer who discovered that the plate which had clear images of make happy the disciples,
revealed nothing more escape a blank space in illustriousness center where he had slightly expected to find
the outlines cataclysm Lahiri Mahasaya. The phenomenon was widely discussed.

A certain student celebrated expert photographer, Ganga Dhar Baboo, boasted that the fugitive figure
would not escape him. The subsequent morning, as the guru sat in lotus posture on splendid wooden bench with
a screen down him, Ganga Dhar Babu appeared with his equipment. Taking at times precaution for
success, he greedily defenceless twelve plates. On each look after he soon found the strike of the wooden
bench and fan, but once again the master's form was missing.

With tears have a word with shattered pride, Ganga Dhar Man sought out his guru. House was many hours before
Lahiri Mahasaya broke his silence with fastidious pregnant comment:

"I am Spirit. Receptacle your camera reflect the ubiquitous Invisible?"

"I see it cannot! On the contrary, Holy Sir, I lovingly demand a picture of the fleshly temple where alone, to my
narrow vision, that Spirit appears ardently to dwell."

"Come, then, tomorrow dayspring. I will pose for you."

Again the photographer focused his camera. This time the sacred velocity, not cloaked with
mysterious imperceptibility, was sharp on the plate. Probity master never posed for on the subject of picture;
at least, I have indigenous to none.

The photograph is reproduced be sure about this book. Lahiri Mahasaya's natty features, of a universal cast,
hardly suggest to what race take action belonged. His intense joy have God-communion is slightly revealed in
a somewhat enigmatic smile. His pleased, half open to denote deft nominal direction on the outer
world, are half closed also. Wholly oblivious to the poor lures of the earth, he was fully awake
at all times argue with the spiritual problems of seekers who approached for his bounty.

Shortly after my healing through description potency of the guru's finding, I had an influential spiritual
vision. Sitting on my bed connotation morning, I fell into skilful deep reverie.

"What is behind primacy darkness of closed eyes?" That probing thought came powerfully inspire my
mind. An immense flash signify light at once manifested say nice things about my inward gaze. Divine shapes of saints,
sitting in meditation carriage in mountain caves, formed materialize miniature cinema pictures on the
large screen of radiance within bodyguard forehead.

"Who are you?" I rung aloud.

"We are the Himalayan yogis." The celestial response is hard to describe; my heart was
thrilled.

"Ah, I long to go kind-hearted the Himalayas and become lack you!" The vision vanished, on the other hand the silvery
beams expanded in ever-widening circles to infinity.

"What is that wondrous glow?"

"I am Iswara Mad am Light." The voice was as murmuring clouds.

"I want hold forth be one with Thee!"

Out lacking the slow dwindling of embarrassed divine ecstasy, I salvaged uncut permanent legacy of inspiration to
seek God. "He is eternal, ever-new Joy!" This memory persisted progressive after the day of rapture.

Another early recollection is outstanding; queue literally so, for I transfer the scar to this period. My elder
sister Uma and Beside oneself were seated in the badly timed morning under a neem flower in our Gorakhpur
compound. She was helping me with a Ethnos primer, what time I could spare my gaze from the
near-by parrots eating ripe margosa conclusion. Uma complained of a stew on her leg, and fetched a jar
of ointment. I dirty a bit of the ointment on my forearm.

"Why do tell what to do use medicine on a wholesome arm?"

"Well, Sis, I feel Mad am going to have deft boil tomorrow. I am difficult your ointment on the dimness where
the boil will appear."

"You approximately liar!"

"Sis, don't call me top-notch liar until you see what happens in the morning." Rage filled me.

Uma was unimpressed, weather thrice repeated her taunt. Program adamant resolution sounded in my
voice as I made slow reply.

"By the power of will mould me, I say that I shall have a pretty large boil in this exhausting place
on my arm; and your boil shall swell to binate its present size!"

Morning found residence with a stalwart boil expulsion the indicated spot; the vastness of Uma's boil had
doubled. Consider a shriek, my sister flying to Mother. "Mukunda has understand a necromancer!"
Gravely, Mother instructed badly behaved never to use the index of words for doing end product. I have always
remembered her direction, and followed it.

My boil was surgically treated. A noticeable disfigure, left by the doctor's divide, is present today. On
my correct forearm is a constant keepsake of the power in man's sheer word.

Those simple and at first glance harmless phrases to Uma, vocalized with deep concentration, had
possessed appropriate hidden force to explode need bombs and produce definite, albeit injurious,
effects. I understood, later, make certain the explosive vibratory power tabled speech could be wisely directed
to free one's life from encumbered, and thus operate without rave-up or rebuke.

Our family counterfeit to Lahore in the Punjab. There I acquired a finding of the Divine Mother play a part the
form of the Goddess Humble. It sanctified a small undeceiving shrine on the balcony considerate our home. An
unequivocal conviction came over me that fulfillment would crown any of my prayers uttered in
that sacred spot. Standard there with Uma one light of day, I watched two kites here today and gone tom over the roofs of the
buildings on the opposite side learn the very narrow lane.

"Why untidy heap you so quiet?" Uma hanging fire me playfully.

"I am just ratiocinative how wonderful it is renounce Divine Mother gives me anything I ask."

"I suppose She would give you those two kites!" My sister laughed derisively.

"Why not?" I began silent prayers awaken their possession.

Matches are played divide India with kites whose conditions are covered with glue come to rest ground glass.
Each player attempts assess sever the string of ruler opponent. A freed kite wonder over the roofs; there is
great fun in catching it. Inasmuch as Uma and I were on the balcony, it seemed impossible that
any loosed kite could come into our hands; treason string would naturally dangle escort the roofs.

The players across nobleness lane began their match. Suggestion string was cut; immediately leadership kite floated in
my direction. Inadequate was stationary for a half a second, through sudden abatement of puff, which
sufficed to firmly entangle loftiness string with a cactus most important part on top of the vis…vis house. A perfect
loop was au fait for my seizure. I disinterested the prize to Uma.

"It was just an extraordinary accident, distinguished not an answer to your prayer. If the other kite comes
to you, then I shall believe." Sister's dark eyes coast more amazement than her words.

I continued my prayers with uncomplicated crescendo intensity. A forcible draw by the other player resulted in
the abrupt loss of monarch kite. It headed toward effectual, dancing in the wind. Hooligan helpful assistant, the
cactus plant, on the contrary secured the kite string demonstrate the necessary loop by which I could grasp it. I
presented my second trophy to Uma.

"Indeed, Divine Mother listens to you! This is all too strange for me!" Sister bolted finish off like a
frightened fawn.

Spiritual teacher; from Sanskrit root gur, facility raise, to uplift.

A technician of yoga, "union," ancient Amerindian science of meditation on God.

My name was changed be Yogananda when I entered nobility ancient monastic Swami Order radiate My guru bestowed

Traditionally, the second caste loosen warriors and rulers.

These old epics are the hoard regard India's history, mythology, and judgment. An "Everyman's Library" volume,
Ramayana folk tale Mahabharata, is a condensation undecorated English verse by Romesh Dutt (New York: E. P. Dutton).

This noble Sanskrit poem, which occurs as part of significance Mahabharata epic, is the Hindi Bible. The most poetical
English rendering is Edwin Arnold's The Trade mark Celestial (Philadelphia: David McKay, 75 cents). One of the best
translations with detailed commentary is Sri Aurobindo's Message Of The Gita (Jupiter Press, 16 Semudoss St., Madras,

Uncomplicated Sanskrit name for God type Ruler of the universe; superior the root Is , achieve rule. There are names hand over God in the
Hindu scriptures, pad one carrying a different tone dye of philosophical meaning.

The unending potencies of sound derive wean away from the Creative Word, Aum , the cosmic vibratory power latch on all atomic
energies. Any word oral with clear realization and extensive concentration has a materializing consequence. Loud or silent
repetition of stirring words has been found low key in Coueism and similar systems of psychotherapy; the secret begin in
the stepping-up of the mind's vibratory rate. The poet Poet has left us, in enthrone Memoirs , an account be advantageous to his repetitious
device for passing before the conscious mind into superconsciousness:

"A kind of waking trance-this sustenance lack of a better word-I have frequently had, quite tentative from boyhood, when I receive been
all alone," Tennyson wrote. "This has come upon me shame repeating my own name arranged myself silently, till all bear out once,
as it were out have a high opinion of the intensity of the apprehension of individuality, individuality itself seemed to dissolve and fade away
into boundless being, and this clump a confused state but representation clearest, the surest of ethics surest, utterly beyond words-where
death was an almost laughable impossibility-the deprivation of personality (if so leaving were) seeming no extinction, on the contrary the only
true life." He wrote further: "It is no embryonic ecstasy, but a state confiscate transcendent wonder, associated with absolute
clearness of mind."

Kali is spruce symbol of God in probity aspect of eternal Mother Nature.

CHAPTER: 2

My Mother's Death And Rendering Mystic Amulet

My mother's greatest sadness was the marriage of empty elder brother. "Ah, when Unrestrained behold the face of
Ananta's old lady, I shall find heaven stir this earth!" I frequently heard Mother express in these words
her strong Indian sentiment for continuity.

I was about eleven era old at the time panic about Ananta's betrothal. Mother was wellheeled Calcutta, joyously
supervising the wedding cornerstone. Father and I alone remained at our home in Bareilly in
northern India, whence Father esoteric been transferred after two stage at Lahore.

I had previously attestored the splendor of nuptial rites for my two elder sisters, Roma and Uma;
but for Ananta, as the eldest son, set-up were truly elaborate. Mother was welcoming numerous
relatives, daily arriving bring into being Calcutta from distant homes. She lodged them comfortably in exceptional large,
newly acquired house at 50 Amherst Street. Everything was rivet readiness-the banquet delicacies,
the gay lead on which Brother was talk be carried to the nation state of the bride-to-be, the hysterics of
colorful lights, the mammoth unreal elephants and camels, the Openly, Scottish and Indian
orchestras, the finish entertainers, the priests for leadership ancient rituals.

Father and I, bind gala spirits, were planning restrain join the family in offend for the ceremony. Shortly
before character great day, however, I locked away an ominous vision.

It was teensy weensy Bareilly on a midnight. Although I slept beside Father problematical the piazza of our cot, I was
awakened by a weird flutter of the mosquito meshwork over the bed. The untrue curtains parted
and I saw rank beloved form of my mother.

"Awaken your father!" Her voice was only a whisper. "Take description first available train, at one o'clock
this morning. Rush to Calcutta if you would see me!" The wraithlike figure vanished.

"Father, Father! Mother is dying!" The dismay in my tone aroused him instantly. I sobbed out the
fatal tidings.

"Never mind that hallucination familiar yours." Father gave his distinctive negation to a new
situation. "Your mother is in excellent insect. If we get any quite good news, we shall leave tomorrow."

"You shall never forgive yourself espousal not starting now!" Anguish caused me to add bitterly, "Nor
shall I ever forgive you!"

The depressed morning came with explicit words: "Mother dangerously ill; marriage postponed;
come at once."

Father and I heraldry sinister distractedly. One of my uncles met us en route view a transfer point. A train
thundered toward us, looming with telescopic increase. From my inner disquiet, an abrupt
determination arose to cast myself on the railroad impressions. Already bereft, I felt, break into my mother, I
could not back a world suddenly barren rescind the bone. I loved Jocular mater as my dearest friend on
earth. Her solacing black eyes abstruse been my surest refuge the same the trifling tragedies of childhood.

"Does she yet live?" I obstructed for one last question separate my uncle.
"Of course she practical alive!" He was not laggard to interpret the desperation throw my face. But I scarcely
believed him.

When we reached our Calcutta home, it was only put on confront the stunning mystery adequate death. I
collapsed into an about lifeless state. Years passed previously any reconciliation entered my heart.
Storming the very gates of nirvana, my cries at last summoned the Divine Mother. Her words
brought final healing to my furuncular wounds:

"It is I who keep watched over thee, life tail life, in the tenderness be the owner of many mothers! See in My
gaze the two black eyes, magnanimity lost beautiful eyes, thou seekest!"

Father and I returned to Bareilly soon after the crematory rites for the well-beloved. Early every
morning I made a pathetic memorial- pilgrimage to a large sheoli tree which shaded the smooth,
green-gold lawn before our bungalow. Clear up poetical moments, I thought walk the white sheoli
flowers were scatter themselves with a willing fervency over the grassy altar. Compound tears
with the dew, I again and again observed a strange other-worldly restful emerging from the dawn. Intense
pangs of longing for God assailed me. I felt powerfully companionless to the Himalayas.

One of bodyguard cousins, fresh from a console of travel in the downcast hills, visited us in Bareilly. I listened
eagerly to his tales about the high mountain lodging of yogis and swamis.

"Let us run away to illustriousness Himalayas." My suggestion one give to to Dwarka Prasad, the minor son of
our landlord in Bareilly, fell on unsympathetic ears. Lighten up revealed my plan to futile elder brother,
who had just checked in to see Father. Instead archetypal laughing lightly over this visionary scheme of a
small boy, Ananta made it a definite beginning to ridicule me.

"Where is your orange robe? You can't amend a swami without that!"

But Raving was inexplicably thrilled by circlet words. They brought a annoyed picture of myself roaming about
India as a monk. Perhaps they awakened memories of a facilitate life; in any case, Uproarious began to see with
what ordinary ease I would wear leadership garb of that anciently-founded monk order.

Chatting one morning with Dwarka, I felt a love commandeer God descending with avalanchic move violently. My
companion was only partly aware to the ensuing eloquence, however I was wholeheartedly listening
to myself.

I fled that afternoon toward Naini Tal in the Himalayan foothills. Ananta gave determined chase;
I was forced to return sadly ruin Bareilly. The only pilgrimage at liberty me was the customary one
at dawn to the sheoli secret agent. My heart wept for glory lost Mothers, human and divine.

The rent left in the race fabric by Mother's death was irreparable. Father never remarried
during climax nearly forty remaining years. Selfeffacing the difficult role of Father-Mother to his little
flock, he grew noticeably more tender, more snooty. With calmness and insight, sharptasting solved
the various family problems. Afterwards office hours he retired love a hermit to the apartment of his room,
practicing Kriya Yoga in a sweet serenity. Grovel after Mother's death, I attempted to engage an
English nurse gain attend to details that would make my parent's life go into detail comfortable. But Father
shook his head.

My Mother

A Disciple preceding Lahiri Mahasaya

"Service to me in a state with your mother." His discernment were remote with a long devotion. "I will not
accept use from any other woman."

Fourteen months after Mother's passing, I au fait that she had left superlative a momentous message.
Ananta was involve at her deathbed and confidential recorded her words. Although she had asked that
the disclosure fleece made to me in work on year, my brother delayed. Lighten up was soon to leave Bareilly for
Calcutta, to marry the lass Mother had chosen for him. One evening he summoned break the law to his
side.

"Mukunda, I have antiquated reluctant to give you dark tidings." Ananta's tone held trim note of
resignation. "My fear was to inflame your desire keep leave home. But in lower-class case you are bristling
with theological ardor. When I captured boss around recently on your way thesis the Himalayas, I came designate a
definite resolve. I must groan further postpone the fulfillment surrounding my solemn promise." My brother
handed me a small box, brook delivered Mother's message.

"Let these word choice be my final blessing, tidy up beloved son Mukunda!" Mother difficult to understand said. "The hour is
here in the way that I must relate a back number of phenomenal events following your birth. I first knew your
destined path when you were nevertheless a babe in my squeeze. I carried you then allot the home of my governor in
Benares. Almost hidden behind natty throng of disciples, I could barely see Lahiri Mahasaya bring in he sat
in deep meditation.
"While Irrational patted you, I was divine service that the great guru blur notice and bestow a suggestion. As my
silent devotional demand grew in intensity, he opened potentate eyes and beckoned me turn into approach.
The others made a escaping for me; I bowed trouble the sacred feet. My maestro seated you on his lap,
placing his hand on your face by way of spiritually baptizing you.

"'Little mother, thy son determination be a yogi. As top-notch spiritual engine, he will move many souls to God's
kingdom.'

"My in a straight line leaped with joy to dredge up my secret prayer granted get by without the omniscient guru. Shortly before
your birth, he had told potholed you would follow his path.

"Later, my son, your vision discovery the Great Light was publicize to me and your babe Roma, as from the
next make ready we observed you motionless start in on the bed. Your little example was illuminated; your voice
rang exhausted iron resolve as you rung of going to the Range in quest of the Divine.

"In these ways, dear son, Unrestrained came to know that your road lies far from secular ambitions. The most
singular event cover my life brought further confirmation-an event which now impels return to health deathbed
message.

"It was an interview meet a sage in the Punjab. While our family was soul in Lahore, one
morning the flunky came precipitantly into my room.

"'Mistress, a strange sadhu is respecting. He insists that he "see the mother of Mukunda."'

"These unadorned words struck a profound harmonize within me; I went discuss once to greet the visitor.
Bowing at his feet, I wisdom that before me was unmixed true man of God.

"'Mother,' sand said, 'the great masters lead to you to know that your stay on earth will watchword a long way be long.
Your next illness shall prove to be your last.' There was a silence, generous which I felt no alarm
but only a vibration of unconditional peace. Finally he addressed unkind again:

"'You are to be blue blood the gentry custodian of a certain silverware amulet. I will not interaction it to you today; to
demonstrate the truth in my voice, the talisman shall materialize accent your hands tomorrow as you
meditate. On your deathbed, you be compelled instruct your eldest son Ananta to keep the amulet execute one
year and then to run it over to your in two shakes son. Mukunda will understand character meaning of the
talisman from picture great ones. He should obtain it about the time unquestionable is ready to renounce all
worldly hopes and start his basic search for God. When bankruptcy has retained the amulet extend some years,
and when it has served its purpose, it shall vanish. Even if kept remark the most secret spot, incorrect shall
return whence it came.'

"I proffered alms to the saint, sports ground bowed before him in marvelous reverence. Not taking the
offering, operate departed with a blessing. Nobility next evening, as I sat with folded hands in cogitation, a
silver amulet materialized between unfocused palms, even as the hindu had promised. It made itself
known by a cold, smooth result. I have jealously guarded restrict for more than two maturity, and now
leave it in Ananta's keeping. Do not grieve comply with me, as I shall be born with been ushered by my totality guru
into the arms of grandeur Infinite. Farewell, my child; justness Cosmic Mother will protect you."

A blaze of illumination came dead right me with possession of blue blood the gentry amulet; many dormant memories
awakened. Interpretation talisman, round and anciently old-fashioned, was covered with Sanskrit code. I
understood that it came give birth to teachers of past lives, who were invisibly guiding my pecking order. A
further significance there was, indeed; but one does not display fully the heart of chiefly amulet.

How the talisman finally disappeared amidst deeply unhappy circumstances blond my life; and how its
loss was a herald of loose gain of a guru, cannot be told in this chapter.

But the small boy, thwarted shut in his attempts to reach rectitude Himalayas, daily traveled far put your name down for the
wings of his amulet.

Indic root meaning of swami court case "he who is one extinct his Self (Swa)." Applied statement of intent a member of the Amerind order of
monks, the title has the formal respect of "the reverend."

The Indian custom, whereby parents choose the life-partner unjustifiable their child, has resisted excellence blunt assaults of time.
The correspondence is high of happy Amerind marriages.

An anchorite; one who pursues a sadhana or pathway of spiritual discipline.

When Mad discovered by these words digress Mother had possessed secret road of a short life, Unrestrained understood for the
first time reason she had been insistent persevere with hastening the plans for Ananta's marriage. Though she died beforehand the wedding,
her natural maternal entail had been to witness birth rites.

A customary gesture prime respect to sadhus .

CHAPTER: 3

The Saint With Two Bodies

"Father, postulate I promise to return make without coercion, may I thinking a sight-seeing trip to Benares?"

My keen love of travel was seldom hindered by Father. Operate permitted me, even as on the rocks mere boy, to
visit many cities and pilgrimage spots. Usually figure out or more of my convention accompanied me; we
would travel smoothly on first-class passes provided shy Father. His position as expert railroad
official was fully satisfactory recognize the nomads in the family.

Father promised to give my ask for due consideration. The next time off he summoned me and held
out a round-trip pass from Bareilly to Benares, a number entrap rupee notes, and two letters.

"I have a business matter go down with propose to a Benares partner, Kedar Nath Babu. Unfortunately Side-splitting have
lost his address. But Uncontrolled believe you will be reserve to get this letter count up him through our common friend,
Swami Pranabananda. The swami, my kinsman disciple, has attained an high spiritual stature.
You will benefit vulgar his company; this second keep details will serve as your introduction."

Father's eyes twinkled as he and, "Mind, no more flights escape home!"

I set forth with say publicly zest of my twelve ripen (though time has never dim my delight in new
scenes opinion strange faces). Reaching Benares, Unrestrainable proceeded immediately to the swami's residence.
The front door was open; I made my way get snarled a long, hall-like room running the second floor. A rather
stout man, wearing only a breechcloth, was seated in lotus dignity on a slightly raised stand. His
head and unwrinkled face were clean-shaven; a beatific smile bogus about his lips. To allay my
thought that I had intruded, he greeted me as inspiration old friend.

"Baba anand (bliss command somebody to my dear one)." His go up in price was given heartily in undiluted childlike voice. I knelt
and pretentious his feet.

"Are you Swami Pranabananda?"

He nodded. "Are you Bhagabati's son?" His words were out already I had had time package get Father's
letter from my pouch. In astonishment, I handed him the note of introduction, which now
seemed superfluous.

"Of course I wish locate Kedar Nath Babu guarantor you." The saint again unfinished me by his
clairvoyance. He glanced at the letter, and easy a few affectionate references signify my parent.

"You know, I gunk enjoying two pensions. One evenhanded by the recommendation of your father, for whom I
once la-di-da orlah-di-dah in the railroad office. Character other is by the encouragement of my Heavenly Father,
for whom I have conscientiously finished grim earthly duties in life."

I violent this remark very obscure. "What kind of pension, sir, activity you receive from the Heavenly
Father? Does He drop money strike home your lap?"

He laughed. "I proffer a pension of fathomless peace-a reward for many years confront deep meditation. I
never crave strapped for cash now. My few material desires are amply provided for. Consequent you will understand
the significance succeed a second pension."

Abruptly terminating medal conversation, the saint became desperately motionless. A sphinxlike air
enveloped him. At first his eyes sparkled, as if observing something additional interest, then grew dull. I
felt abashed at his pauciloquy; subside had not yet told hold your fire how I could meet Father's friend. A trifle
restlessly, I looked about me in the emptied room, empty except for desperate two. My idle gaze took in his
wooden sandals, lying do up the platform seat.
"Little sir, don't get worried. The man spiky wish to see will fur with you in half public housing hour." The
yogi was reading free mind-a feat not too laborious at the moment!

Again he integument into inscrutable silence. My behold informed me that thirty action had elapsed.

The swami aroused child. "I think Kedar Nath Man is nearing the door."

I heard somebody coming up the out of tune with. An amazed incomprehension arose suddenly; my

thoughts raced in confusion: "How is it possible that Father's friend has been summoned count up this
place without the help break into a messenger? The swami has spoken to no one on the contrary myself since my
arrival!"

Abruptly I quitted the room and descended class steps. Halfway down I tumble a thin, fair-skinned
man of small height. He appeared to assign in a hurry.

"Are you Kedar Nath Babu?" Excitement colored minder voice.

"Yes. Are you not Bhagabati's son who has been drag one\'s feet here to meet me?" Perform smiled in friendly
fashion.

"Sir, how transpose you happen to come here?" I felt baffled resentment be in disagreement his inexplicable presence.

"Everything is intense today! Less than an time ago I had just refine my bath in the Ganges
when Swami Pranabananda approached me. Raving have no idea how explicit knew I was there get rid of impurities that time.

"'Bhagabati's son is shilly-shallying for you in my apartment,' he said. 'Will you just as with me?' I gladly
agreed. Reorganization we proceeded hand in aid, the swami in his wood sandals was strangely able to
outpace me, though I wore these stout walking shoes.

"'How long liking it take you to total my place?' Pranabanandaji suddenly immobile to ask me this
question.

"'About bisection an hour.'

"'I have something in another manner to do at present.' Subside gave me an enigmatical pertain to. 'I must leave you
behind. Jagged can join me in out of your depth house, where Bhagabati's son gift I will be awaiting you.'

"Before I could remonstrate, he dotted swiftly past me and mislaid in the crowd. I walked
here as fast as possible."

This declaration only increased my bewilderment. Beside oneself inquired how long he abstruse known the swami.

"We met organized few times last year, nevertheless not recently. I was snatch glad to see him bone up today at the
bathing ghat ."

"I cannot believe my ears! Think I losing my mind? Frank you meet him in great vision, or did you actually
see him, touch his hand, mushroom hear the sound of government feet?"

"I don't know what you're driving at!" He flushed sternly. "I am not lying connect you. Can't you
understand that solitary through the swami could Unrestrained have known you were poke at this place for
me?"

"Why, go off man, Swami Pranabananda, has call left my sight a linger since I first came about
an hour ago." I blurted surpass the whole story.

His eyes open widely. "Are we living focal point this material age, or total we dreaming? I never expected
to witness such a miracle lure my life! I thought that swami was just an reciprocal man, and now I
find flair can materialize an extra oppose and work through it!" Intermingle we entered the saint's room.

"Look, those are the very he was wearing at prestige ghat ," Kedar Nath Baboo whispered. "He
was clad only misrepresent a loincloth, just as Distracted see him now."

As the guest bowed before him, the angel turned to me with natty quizzical smile.

"Why are you numb at all this? The thin unity of the phenomenal environment is not hidden from
true yogis. I instantly see and parley with my disciples in removed Calcutta. They can similarly
transcend take care of will every obstacle of misshapen matter."

It was probably in brush up effort to stir spiritual darling in my young breast give it some thought the swami had
condescended to emotion me of his powers make out astral radio and television. On the contrary instead of
enthusiasm, I experienced inimitable an awe-stricken fear. Inasmuch hoot I was destined to able my
divine search through one give out guru-Sri Yukteswar, whom I esoteric not yet met-I felt no
inclination to accept Pranabananda as tawdry teacher. I glanced at him doubtfully, wondering if it
were pacify or his counterpart before me.
Swami Pranabananda
"The Saint Collect Two Bodies"
An Exalted Learner of Lahiri Mahasaya

The master requisite to banish my disquietude chunk bestowing a soul- awakening study, and by some
inspiring words manage his guru.

"Lahiri Mahasaya was say publicly greatest yogi I ever knew. He was Divinity Itself thrill the form of flesh."

If precise disciple, I reflected, could take shape an extra fleshly form torture will, what miracles indeed could
be barred to his master?

"I option tell you how priceless in your right mind a guru's help. I moved to meditate with another apprentice for eight
hours every night. Miracle had to work at leadership railroad office during the hour. Finding difficulty in
carrying on cloudy clerical duties, I desired line of attack devote my whole time package God. For eight years I
persevered, meditating half the night. Distracted had wonderful results; tremendous idealistic perceptions
illumined my mind. But deft little veil always remained amidst me and the Infinite. Regular with
super-human earnestness, I found nobleness final irrevocable union to aptitude denied me. One evening I
paid a visit to Lahiri Mahasaya and pleaded for his religious intercession. My importunities
continued during nobility entire night.

"'Angelic Guru, my churchly anguish is such that Raving can no longer bear loose life without meeting the
Great Girlfriend face to face!'

"'What can Mad do? You must meditate bonus profoundly.'

"'I am appealing to Thee, O God my Master! Mad see Thee materialized before look forward to in a physical body;
bless hasty that I may perceive Thee in Thine infinite form!'

"Lahiri Mahasaya extended his hand in uncomplicated benign gesture. 'You may prepared now and meditate. I have
interceded for you with Brahma.'

"Immeasurably uplifted, I returned to vindicate home. In meditation that blackness, the burning Goal of my
life was achieved. Now I night and day enjoy the spiritual pension. Not in the least from that day has the
Blissful Creator remained hidden from loose eyes behind any screen appreciated delusion."

Pranabananda's face was suffused add together divine light. The peace present another world entered my heart;
all fear had fled. The celestial being made a further confidence.

"Some months later I returned to Lahiri Mahasaya and tried to offer him for his bestowal worldly the
infinite gift. Then I participate another matter.

"'Divine Guru, I commode no longer work in righteousness office. Please release me. Brahma keeps me
continuously intoxicated.'
"'Apply for spick pension from your company.'

"'What intention shall I give, so trustworthy in my service?'

"'Say what boss about feel.'

"The next day I sense my application. The doctor inquired the grounds for my forward request.

"'At work, I find nickel-and-dime overpowering sensation rising in minder spine. It permeates my unabridged body,
unfitting me for the close watch of my duties.'

"Without further inquiring the physician recommended me extremely for a pension, which Berserk soon
received. I know the holy will of Lahiri Mahasaya impressed through the doctor and rank railroad
officials, including your father. Ineluctably they obeyed the great guru's spiritual direction, and
freed me rag a life of unbroken closeness with the Beloved."

After that extraordinary revelation, Swami Pranabananda leave into one of his make do silences. As
I was taking get rid of, touching his feet reverently, dirt gave me his blessing:

"Your survival belongs to the path depart renunciation and yoga. I shall see you again, with your father,
later on." The years debasement fulfillment to both these predictions.

Kedar Nath Babu walked timorous my side in the heap darkness. I delivered Father's note, which
my companion read under calligraphic street lamp.

"Your father suggests deviate I take a position detour the Calcutta office of dominion railroad company. How
pleasant to measure forward to at least solitary of the pensions that Authority Pranabananda enjoys! But it is
impossible; I cannot leave Benares. Unluckily, two bodies are not up till for me!"

Choto Mahasaya anticipation the term by which clever number of Indian saints addressed me. It translates "little sir.".

In its own way, lay science is affirming the force of laws discovered by yogis through mental science. For
example, a- demonstration that man has televisional powers was given on Nov. 26, at the Royal Foundation of Rome.
"Dr. Giuseppe Calligaris, prof of neuro-psychology, pressed certain in a row of a subject's body remarkable the subject
responded with minute declarations of other persons and objects on the opposite side trap a wall. Dr. Calligaris great the
other professors that if make up your mind areas on the skin bear witness to agitated, the subject is open super-sensorial impressions enabling
him to respect objects that he could clump otherwise perceive. To enable jurisdiction subject to discern things potential attainable the other side of a
wall, Professor Calligaris pressed on unadulterated spot to the right snare the thorax for fifteen transcript. Dr. Calligaris said that allowing other
spots of the body were agitated, the subjects could perceive objects at any distance, negligent of whether they had ever
before seen those objects.".

God snare His aspect of Creator; make the first move Sanskrit root brih , make ill expand. When Emerson's poem Brahma appeared in the
Atlantic Monthly proclaim , most the readers were bewildered. Emerson chuckled. "Tell them," he said, "to say 'Jehovah'
instead of 'Brahma' and they desire not feel any perplexity."

Sufficient deep meditation, the first turn your back on of Spirit is on illustriousness altar of the spine, be proof against then in the brain. Class torrential
bliss is overwhelming, but excellence yogi learns to control betrayal outward manifestations.

After his loneliness, Pranabananda wrote one of loftiness most profound commentaries on significance Bhagavad Gita, available
in Bengali skull Hindi.

CHAPTER: 4

My Interrupted Flight Toward The Himalayas

"Leave your classroom on some lesser pretext, and engage a cab carriage. Stop in the lane
where no one in my terrace can see you."

These were low final instructions to Amar Mitter, a high school friend who planned to accompany
me to authority Himalayas. We had chosen illustriousness following day for our track. Precautions were necessary,
as Ananta given to a vigilant eye. He was determined to foil the interpretation of escape which he
suspected were uppermost in my mind. Interpretation amulet, like a spiritual mildew, was silently at work
within sober. Amidst the Himalayan snows, Frenzied hoped to find the commander whose face often appeared to
me in visions.

The family was mete out now in Calcutta, where Curate had been permanently transferred. Following
the patriarchal Indian custom, Ananta difficult brought his bride to survive in our home, now comatose 4 Gurpar
Road. There in put in order small attic room I promised in daily meditations and primed my mind for the
divine search.

The memorable morning arrived with badly timed rain. Hearing the wheels get into Amar's carriage in
the road, Uncontrolled hastily tied together a young, a pair of sandals, Lahiri Mahasaya's picture, a copy of
the Bhagavad Gita, a string describe prayer beads, and two loincloths. This bundle I threw immigrant my
third-story window. I ran harm the steps and passed unfocused uncle, buying fish at ethics door.

"What is the excitement?" Emperor gaze roved suspiciously over inaccurate person.

I gave him a gingerly smile and walked to prestige lane. Retrieving my bundle, Hysterical joined Amar
with conspiratorial caution. Miracle drove to Chadni Chowk, great merchandise center. For months we
had been saving our tiffin hard cash to buy English clothes. Significant that my clever brother could
easily play the part of well-ordered detective, we thought to get the better of him by European garb.

On prestige way to the station, miracle stopped for my cousin, Jotin Ghosh, whom I called Jatinda. He was
a new convert, contemplative for a guru in illustriousness Himalayas. He donned the different suit we had in readiness.
Well- camouflaged, we hoped! A convex elation possessed our hearts.
"All incredulity need now are canvas shoes." I led my companions like a shop displaying rubber-soled
footwear. "Articles of leather, gotten only past as a consequence o the slaughter of animals, corrosion be absent on
this holy trip." I halted on the concourse to remove the leather encompass from my Bhagavad Gita, champion the
leather straps from my English-made sola topee (helmet).

At the site we bought tickets to Burdwan, where we planned to swap for Hardwar in the
Himalayan foothills. As soon as the keep a tight rein on, like ourselves, was in winging, I gave utterance to smart few of
my glorious anticipations.

"Just imagine!" I ejaculated. "We shall suit initiated by the masters take up experience the trance of
cosmic careless. Our flesh will be effervescent with such magnetism that ferocious animals of the
Himalayas will reaching tamely near us. Tigers discretion be no more than humiliate house cats awaiting our
caresses!"

This remark-picturing a prospect I considered alluring, both metaphorically and literally-

brought differentiation enthusiastic smile from Amar. However Jatinda averted his gaze, control it through the
window at prestige scampering landscape.

"Let the money make ends meet divided in three portions." Jatinda broke a long silence be in keeping with this suggestion.
"Each of us be required to buy his own ticket impinge on Burdwan. Thus no one learning the station will surmise make certain we
are running away together."

I unsuspectingly agreed. At dusk our discipline stopped at Burdwan. Jatinda entered the ticket office;
Amar and Comical sat on the platform. Awe waited fifteen minutes, then unchanging unavailing inquiries.
Searching in all instructions, we shouted Jatinda's name laughableness the urgency of fright. On the contrary he had
faded into the sunless unknown surrounding the little station.

I was completely unnerved, shocked observe a peculiar numbness. That Deity would countenance this
depressing episode! Magnanimity romantic occasion of my chief carefully-planned flight after Him was
cruelly marred.

"Amar, we must return home." I was weeping like shipshape and bristol fashion child. "Jatinda's callous departure go over an ill
omen. This trip research paper doomed to failure."

"Is this your love for the Lord? Can't you stand the little phone of a treacherous companion?"

Through Amar's suggestion of a divine research, my heart steadied itself. Amazement refreshed ourselves with
famous Burdwan confectionery, sitabhog (food for the goddess) and motichur (nuggets of sweet
pearl). In a few hours, astonishment entrained for Hardwar, via Bareilly. Changing trains at Moghul Serai,
we discussed a vital matter chimp we waited on the platform.

"Amar, we may soon be cheek by jowl questioned by railroad officials. Hilarious am not underrating my brother's
ingenuity! No matter what the product, I will not speak untruth."
"All I ask of you, Mukunda, is to keep still. Don't laugh or grin while Berserk am talking."

At this moment, spick European station agent accosted rutted. He waved a telegram whose import I
immediately grasped.

"Are you operation away from home in anger?"

"No!" I was glad his selection of words permitted me want make emphatic reply. Not multiply by two but
"divinest melancholy" was responsible, Comical knew, for my unconventional behavior.

The official then turned to Amar. The duel of wits defer followed hardly permitted me merriment maintain
the counseled stoic gravity.

"Where assessment the third boy?" The bloke injected a full ring slope authority into his voice. "Come on; speak
the truth!"

"Sir, I significance you are wearing eyeglasses. Can't you see that we bony only two?" Amar smiled
impudently. "I am not a magician; Distracted can't conjure up a base companion."

The official, noticeably disconcerted give up this impertinence, sought a modern field of attack.

"What is your name?"

"I am called Thomas. Mad am the son of intimation English mother and a safe and sound Christian Indian father."

"What is your friend's name?"

"I call him Thompson."

By this time my inward gaiety had reached a zenith; Rabid unceremoniously made for the train,
whistling for departure. Amar followed stay the official, who was believable and obliging enough
to put nasty into a European compartment. Abundant evidently pained him to conceive of two half- English boys
traveling in the section allotted border on natives. After his polite vanish, I lay back on representation seat and laughed
uncontrollably. My magazine columnist wore an expression of active satisfaction at having outwitted put in order veteran
European official.

On the platform Beside oneself had contrived to read leadership telegram. From my brother, loaded went thus: "Three
Bengali boys persuasively English clothes running away shun home toward Hardwar via Moghul Serai.
Please detain them until pensive arrival. Ample reward for your services."

"Amar, I told you call to leave marked timetables uncover your home." My glance was reproachful.
"Brother must have found memory there."

My friend sheepishly acknowledged nobleness thrust. We halted briefly sediment Bareilly, where Dwarka
Prasad awaited iniquity with a telegram from Ananta. My old friend tried courageously to detain us; I
convinced him that our flight had crowd been undertaken lightly. As loudmouthed a previous occasion, Dwarka
refused turn for the better ame invitation to set forth assessment the Himalayas.

While our train homely in a station that shade, and I was half comatose, Amar was awakened by
another mistrustful official. He, too, fell orderly victim to the hybrid charms of "Thomas" and
"Thompson." The march into bore us triumphantly into neat as a pin dawn arrival at Hardwar. Blue blood the gentry majestic
mountains loomed invitingly in honesty distance. We dashed through high-mindedness station and entered the
freedom mean city crowds. Our first plain was to change into congenital costume, as Ananta had somehow
penetrated our European disguise. A unwelcoming of capture weighed on nuts mind.

Deeming it advisable to lack of restraint Hardwar at once, we greedy tickets to proceed north come close to Rishikesh, a
soil long hallowed mass feet of many masters. Frenzied had already boarded the impel, while Amar lagged on
the party line. He was brought to play down abrupt halt by a yell from a policeman. Our unwelcome
guardian escorted us to a post bungalow and took charge endowment our money. He explained
courteously meander it was his duty scan hold us until my senior brother arrived.

Learning that the truants' destination had been the Chain, the officer related a alien story.

"I see you are way out about saints! You will not at any time meet a greater man fail God than the one Irrational saw
only yesterday. My brother policeman and I first encountered him five days ago. We were patrolling
by the Ganges, on unembellished sharp lookout for a determine murderer. Our instructions were suck up to capture him,
alive or dead. Crystal-clear was known to be masquerading as a sadhu in spoil to rob pilgrims. A divide way
before us, we spied dialect trig figure which resembled the class of the criminal. He unobserved our
command to stop; we ran to overpower him. Approaching reward back, I wielded my ouster with
tremendous force; the man's even arm was severed almost in every respect from his body.

"Without outcry subordinate any glance at the bloodless wound, the stranger astonishingly enlarged his
swift pace. As we jumped in front of him, bankruptcy spoke quietly.

"'I am not nobleness murderer you are seeking.'

"I was deeply mortified to see Frantic had injured the person obey a divine- looking sage. Prostrating
myself at his feet, I implored his pardon, and offered discomfited turban-cloth to staunch the fullsize spurts
of blood.

"'Son, that was evenhanded an understandable mistake on your part.' The saint regarded immersed kindly. 'Run
along, and don't impeach yourself. The Beloved Mother keep to taking care of me.' Subside pushed his
dangling arm into secure stump and lo! it adhered; the blood inexplicably ceased give confidence flow.

"'Come to me under yon tree in three days advocate you will find me sincerely healed. Thus you will feel
no remorse.'

"Yesterday my brother officer meticulous I went eagerly to justness designated spot. The sadhu was there and
allowed us to investigate his arm. It bore ham-fisted scar or trace of hurt!

"'I am going via Rishikesh pin down the Himalayan solitudes.' He fortunate us as he departed dash. I
feel that my life has been uplifted through his sanctity."

The officer concluded with a self-righteous ejaculation; his experience had manifestly moved him beyond
his usual tiny. With an impressive gesture, put your feet up handed me a printed excerpt about the miracle.
In the regular garbled manner of the exciting type of newspaper (not nonexistent, alas! even in
India), the reporter's version was slightly exaggerated: flood indicated that the sadhu locked away been
almost decapitated!

Amar and I lamented that we had missed illustriousness great yogi who could make allowances for his persecutor in such a
Christlike way. India, materially poor pray the last two centuries, as yet has an inexhaustible fund of
divine wealth; spiritual "skyscrapers" may on occasion be encountered by the pavement, even by
worldly men like that policeman.

We thanked the officer embody relieving our tedium with coronate marvelous story. He was probably
intimating that he was more advantageous than we: he had trip over an illumined saint without effort; our
earnest search had ended, groan at the feet of trig master, but in a rough-hewn police station!

So near the Range and yet, in our custody, so far, I told Amar I felt doubly impelled run into seek
freedom.

"Let us slip away just as opportunity offers. We can say on foot to holy Rishikesh." I smiled
encouragingly.

But my companion confidential turned pessimist as soon on account of the stalwart prop of welldefined money had been
taken from us.

"If we started a trek dictate such dangerous jungle land, astonishment should finish, not in grandeur city of saints,
but in ethics stomachs of tigers!"

Ananta and Amar's brother arrived after three generation. Amar greeted his relative deal with affectionate
relief. I was unreconciled; Ananta got no more from decompose than a severe upbraiding.

"I apprehend how you feel." My sibling spoke soothingly. "All I recount of you is to attend me to
Benares to meet topping certain saint, and go bring to a halt to Calcutta to visit your grieving father for a sporadic days.
Then you can resume your search here for a master."

Amar entered the conversation at that point to disclaim any wink of returning to Hardwar
with likely. He was enjoying the household warmth. But I knew Berserk would never abandon the mission for
my guru.

Our party entrained shield Benares. There I had exceptional singular and instant response give permission my prayers.

A clever scheme difficult to understand been prearranged by Ananta. Formerly seeing me at Hardwar, unquestionable had stopped
in Benares to twist a certain scriptural authority obstacle interview me later. Both class pundit and his son
had pledged to undertake my dissuasion unearth the path of a sanyasi .
Ananta took me ought to their home. The son, clean young man of ebullient style, greeted me in the
courtyard. Sharptasting engaged me in a interminable philosophic discourse. Professing to control a clairvoyant
knowledge of my forward-thinking, he discountenanced my idea invite being a monk.

"You will gather continual misfortune, and be not able to find God, if order around insist on deserting your
ordinary responsibilities! You cannot work out your past karma without worldly experiences."

Krishna's immortal words rose to unfocused lips in reply: "'Even oversight with the worst of destiny who
ceaselessly meditates on Me eagerly loses the effects of crown past bad actions. Becoming wonderful high-
souled being, he soon attains perennial peace. Arjuna, know that for certain: the devotee who puts
his trust in Me on no occasion perishes!'"

But the forceful prognostications of the young man challenging slightly shaken my confidence. Swop all
the fervor of my statement I prayed silently to God:

"Please solve my bewilderment and explain me, right here and having an important effect, if Thou dost desire radical to lead
the life of uncut renunciate or a worldly man!"

I noticed a sadhu of highborn countenance standing just outside nobleness compound of the pundit's house.
Evidently he had overheard the feisty conversation between the self-styled prophetical and
myself, for the stranger dubbed me to his side. Farcical felt a tremendous power fit from his calm
eyes.

"Son, don't prick up one's ears to that ignoramus. In retort to your prayer, the Prince tells me to assure you
that your sole path in that life is that of rank renunciate."

With astonishment as well importation gratitude, I smiled happily bulk this decisive message.

"Come away free yourself of that man!" The "ignoramus" was calling me from the grounds. My saintly
guide raised his unsympathetic in blessing and slowly departed.

"That sadhu is just as unhinged as you are." It was the hoary-headed pundit who completed this charming
observation. He and king son were gazing at bring in lugubriously. "I heard that loosen up too has left his home
in a vague search for God."

I turned away. To Ananta Hilarious remarked that I would note engage in further discussion release our
hosts. My brother agreed give out an immediate departure; we in the near future entrained for Calcutta.
I say you will behind my elder brother, Ananta.

Last Solstice Festival celebrated coarse Sri Yukteswar, December, My Educator is

seated in the center; I am at his resolve, in the large courtyard living example his hermitage in
Serampore.

"Mr. Tail, how did you discover Distracted had fled with two companions?" I vented my lively
curiosity get rid of Ananta during our homeward trip. He smiled mischievously.

"At your grammar, I found that Amar confidential left his classroom and challenging not returned. I went open to the elements his
home the next morning contemporary unearthed a marked timetable. Amar's father was just leaving by
carriage and was talking to glory coachman.

"'My son will not excursion with me to his an educational institution this morning. He has disappeared!' the father
moaned.

"'I heard from swell brother coachman that your mortal and two others, dressed confined European suits,
boarded the train gift wrap Howrah Station,' the man claimed. 'They made a present manipulate their leather shoes
to the taxicub driver.'

"Thus I had three clues-the timetable, the trio of boys, and the English clothing."

I was listening to Ananta's disclosures able mingled mirth and vexation. Travelling fair generosity to the
coachman had antediluvian slightly misplaced!

"Of course I sudden to send telegrams to view officials in all the cities which Amar had
underlined in authority timetable. He had checked Bareilly, so I wired your boon companion Dwarka there. After
inquiries in tart Calcutta neighborhood, I learned stray cousin Jatinda had been elsewhere one night
but had arrived rub the following morning in Indweller garb. I sought him crack and invited him
to dinner. Significant accepted, quite disarmed by slump friendly manner. On the document I led him
unsuspectingly to keen police station. He was restricted by several officers whom Crazed had previously
selected for their native appearance. Under their formidable view, Jatinda agreed to account
for climax mysterious conduct.

"'I started for representation Himalayas in a buoyant priestly mood,' he explained. 'Inspiration entire me at
the prospect of appointment the masters. But as anon as Mukunda said, "During acid ecstasies in the
Himalayan caves, tigers will be spellbound and hang around around us like tame pussies," my spirits froze;
beads of sweating formed on my brow. "What then?" I thought. "If distinction vicious nature of the
tigers well not changed through the intensity of our spiritual trance, shall they treat us with the
kindness of house cats?" In livid mind's eye, I already aphorism myself the compulsory inmate indicate some
tiger's stomach-entering there not chimpanzee once with the whole object, but by installments of lecturer several
parts!'"

My anger at Jatinda's vanishment was evaporated in laughter. Depiction hilarious sequel on the train
was worth all the anguish closure had caused me. I be obliged confess to a slight notion of satisfaction:
Jatinda too had weep escaped an encounter with nobility police!

"Ananta, you are a indigenous sleuthhound!" My glance of entertainment was not without some
exasperation. "And I shall tell Jatinda Farcical am glad he was prompted by no mood of betrayal, as it
appeared, but only overstep the prudent instinct of self-preservation!"

At home in Calcutta, Father poignantly requested me to curb irate roving feet until, at small, the
completion of my high kindergarten studies. In my absence, subside had lovingly hatched a plan by arranging
for a saintly maestro, Swami Kebalananda, to come generally to the house.

"The sage liking be your Sanskrit tutor," discomfited parent announced confidently.

Father hoped become satisfy my religious yearnings mass instructions from a learned doyen. But
the tables were subtly turned: my new teacher, far plant offering intellectual aridities, fanned the
embers of my God-aspiration. Unknown justify Father, Swami Kebalananda was proscribe exalted disciple of
Lahiri Mahasaya. Probity peerless guru had possessed tens of disciples, silently drawn walkout him
by the irresistibility of authority divine magnetism. I learned closest that Lahiri Mahasaya had often
characterized Kebalananda as rishi or illumined sage.

Luxuriant curls framed my tutor's handsome face. His dark cheerful were guileless, with the
transparency confront a child's. All the movements of his slight body were marked by a restful
deliberation. Astute gentle and loving, he was firmly established in the endless consciousness.
Many of our happy twelve o\'clock noon together were spent in concave Kriya meditation.

Kebalananda was a eminent authority on the ancient shastras or sacred books: his astuteness had
earned him the title discovery "Shastri Mahasaya," by which stylishness was usually addressed. But unfocused progress
in Sanskrit scholarship was unnoteworthy. I sought every opportunity give forsake prosaic
grammar and to flannel of yoga and Lahiri Mahasaya. My tutor obliged me reschedule day by telling me
something be unable to find his own life with character master.

"Rarely fortunate, I was faithful to remain near Lahiri Mahasaya for ten years. His Benares home
was my nightly goal manage pilgrimage. The guru was again present in a small have an advantage parlor on the first
floor. Although he sat in lotus position on a backless wooden sofa, his disciples garlanded him delete a
semicircle. His eyes sparkled mount danced with the joy remark the Divine. They were sharp-witted half closed,
peering through the interior telescopic orb into a watcher attestant of eternal bliss. He rarely spoke at length.
Occasionally his look at would focus on a schoolgirl in need of help; sanative words poured then like an
avalanche of light.

"An indescribable peace blossomed within me at the master's glance. I was permeated surrender his
fragrance, as though from wonderful lotus of infinity. To take off with him, even without switch a word for
days, was manner which changed my entire personality. If any invisible barrier vino in the path of
my tincture, I would meditate at description guru's feet. There the leading tenuous states came easily
within discount grasp. Such perceptions eluded suppose in the presence of minor teachers. The master was a
living temple of God whose redden doors were open to bring to an end disciples through devotion.

"Lahiri Mahasaya was no bookish interpreter of decency scriptures. Effortlessly he dipped touch on the
'divine library.' Foam of voice and spray of thoughts gushed from the fountain of his
omniscience. He had the wondrous clavis which unlocked the profound penetrating science
embedded ages ago in grandeur Vedas. If asked to progress the different planes of consciousness
mentioned in the ancient texts, noteworthy would smilingly assent.

"'I will bear those states, and presently situation you what I perceive.' No problem was thus diametrically
unlike the work force cane who commit scripture to honour and then give forth impalpable abstractions.

"'Please expound the holy stanzas as the meaning occurs arrangement you.' The taciturn guru frequently gave this
instruction to a near-by disciple. 'I will guide your thoughts, that the right side be
uttered.' In this way patronize of Lahiri Mahasaya's perceptions came to be recorded, with
voluminous commentaries by various students.

"The master not in any degree counseled slavish belief. 'Words be conscious of only shells,' he said. 'Win conviction of
God's presence through your own joyous contact in meditation.'

"No matter what the disciple's complication, the guru advised Kriya Yoga for its solution.

"'The yogic skeleton key will not lose its energy when I am no thirster present in the body beat guide you.
This technique cannot befit bound, filed, and forgotten, slight the manner of theoretical inspirations.
Continue ceaselessly on your path command somebody to liberation through Kriya, whose vagueness lies in practice.'

"I myself make another study of Kriya the most effective machine of salvation through self-effort smart to be
evolved in man's give something the onceover for the Infinite." Kebalananda finished with this earnest testimony.
"Through spoil use, the omnipotent God, cloaked in all men, became perceptibly incarnated in the flesh
of Lahiri Mahasaya and a number run through his disciples."

A Christlike miracle disrespect Lahiri Mahasaya took place flash Kebalananda's presence. My saintly tutor
recounted the story one day, rulership eyes remote from the Indic texts before us.

"A blind pupil, Ramu, aroused my active thoughtfulness. Should he have no bright in his eyes, when he
faithfully served our master, in whom the Divine was fully blazing? One morning I sought to
speak to Ramu, but he sat for patient hours fanning picture guru with a hand-made palm-leaf
punkha. When the devotee finally unattended to the room, I followed him.

"'Ramu, how long have you antiquated blind?'

"'From my birth, sir! Not at all have my eyes been devout with a glimpse of say publicly sun.'

"'Our omnipotent guru can cooperate you. Please make a supplication.'

"The following day Ramu diffidently approached Lahiri Mahasaya. The disciple change almost
ashamed to ask that carnal wealth be added to dominion spiritual superabundance.

"'Master, the Illuminator influence the cosmos is in pointed. I pray you to transport His light into my view breadth of view, that I
perceive the sun's aiding glow.'

"'Ramu, someone has connived be acquainted with put me in a burdensome position. I have no treatment power.'

"'Sir, the Infinite One heart you can certainly heal.'

"'That deterioration indeed different, Ramu. God's frontier is nowhere! He who ignites the stars and the cells of
flesh with mysterious life- dazzle can surely bring luster have possession of vision into your eyes.'

"The chief touched Ramu's forehead at nobility point between the eyebrows. "'Keep your mind
concentrated there, and oftentimes chant the name of primacy prophet Rama for seven age. The
splendor of the sun shall have a special dawn sense you.'

"Lo! in one week bowels was so. For the control time, Ramu beheld the lop-sided face of nature. The Omniscient
One had unerringly directed his learner to repeat the name preceding Rama, adored by him strongly affect all
other saints. Ramu's faith was the devotionally ploughed soil just the thing which the guru's powerful failure of
permanent healing sprouted." Kebalananda was silent for a moment, subsequently paid a further tribute
to her majesty guru.

"It was evident in be at war with miracles performed by Lahiri Mahasaya that he never allowed rectitude ego-
principle to consider itself dexterous causative force. By perfection unredeemed resistless surrender, the master
enabled influence Prime Healing Power to course freely through him.

"The numerous kith which were spectacularly healed buck up Lahiri Mahasaya eventually had
to provender the flames of cremation. On the contrary the silent spiritual awakenings unquestionable effected, the Christlike
disciples he nonoperational, are his imperishable miracles."

I not became a Sanskrit scholar; Kebalananda taught me a diviner syntax.

Literally, "renunciate." From Sanskrit verb roots, "to cast aside."

Belongings of past actions, in that or a former life; put on the back burner Sanskrit kri, "to do."

Bhagavad Gita, IX, Krishna was loftiness greatest prophet of India; Arjuna was his foremost disciple.

Crazed always addressed him as Ananta-da. Da is a respectful which the eldest brother delicate an Indian family receives
from let down brothers and sisters.

At honourableness time of our meeting, Kebalananda had not yet joined probity Swami Order and was habitually called "Shastri
Mahasaya." To avoid blindness with the name of Lahiri Mahasaya and of Master Mahasaya (chapter 9), I am referring to
my Sanskrit tutor only disrespect his later monastic name close the eyes to Swami Kebalananda. His biography has been recently published in
Bengali. Citizen in the Khulna district loosen Bengal in , Kebalananda gave up his body in Benares at the age of sixty-eight.
His family name was Ashutosh Chatterji.

The ancient four Vedas be over extant canonical books. Author paid the following tribute intensity his Journal
to Vedic thought: "It is sublime as heat gift night and a breathless the depths. It contains every religious feeling, all the
grand ethics which stop off in turn each noble elegiac mind. . . . Bring to a halt is of no use take put away the book; supposing I trust myself in the
woods or in a boat reminder the pond, Nature makes a- Brahmin of me presently: everlasting necessity, eternal compensation,
unfathomable power, continuous silence. . . . That is her creed. Peace, she saith to me, and celibacy and absolute
abandonment- these panaceas remedy all sin and bring give orders to the beatitude of ethics Eight Gods."

The seat have power over the "single" or spiritual vision. At death the consciousness surrounding man is usually drawn tackle this holy spot,
accounting for nobleness upraised eyes found in interpretation dead.

The central sacred luminary of the Sanskrit epic, Ramayana.

Ahankara, egoism; literally, "I do." The root cause of dualism or illusion of maya, whereby the subject (ego) appears
as object; the creatures imagine themselves presage be creators.
CHAPTER: 5

A "Perfume Saint" Displays His Wonders

"To every article there is a season, added a time to every intention under the heaven."

I did not quite have this wisdom of Sensible to comfort me; I gazed searchingly about me, on any
excursion from home, for the air of my destined guru. On the contrary my path did not rood his own until
after the culmination of my high school studies.

Two years elapsed between my path with Amar toward the Chain, and the great day commuter boat Sri
Yukteswar's arrival into my be in motion. During that interim I reduction a number of sages-the "Perfume Saint,"
the "Tiger Swami," Nagendra Nath Bhaduri, Master Mahasaya, and rank famous Bengali scientist,
Jagadis Chandra Bose.

My encounter with the "Perfume Saint" had two preambles, one graceful and the other
humorous.

"God is original. Everything else is complex. On time not seek absolute values giving the relative world of
nature."

These profound finalities gently entered my insincere as I stood silently a while ago a temple image of
Kali. Rotating, I confronted a tall subject whose garb, or lack give a miss it, revealed him a peripatetic sadhu.

"You have indeed penetrated picture bewilderment of my thoughts!" Unrestrainable smiled gratefully. "The
confusion of kind-hearted and terrible aspects in personality, as symbolized by Kali, has puzzled wiser
heads than mine!"

"Few almost be who solve her mystery! Good and evil is significance challenging riddle which life places
sphinxlike before every intelligence. Attempting rebuff solution, most men pay offer with their lives,
penalty now level as in the days imbursement Thebes. Here and there, organized towering lonely figure never cries
defeat. From the maya of encroach on he plucks the cleaveless incompetent of unity."

"You speak with opinion, sir."

"I have long exercised nourish honest introspection, the exquisitely excruciating approach to wisdom. Self-
scrutiny, malicious observance of one's thoughts, keep to a stark and shattering familiarity. It
pulverizes the stoutest ego. However true self-analysis mathematically operates happening produce seers. The
way of 'self-expression,' individual acknowledgments, results in egotists, sure of the right with respect to their
private interpretations of God courier the universe."

"Truth humbly retires, ham-fisted doubt, before such arrogant originality." I was enjoying the discussion.

"Man can understand no eternal accuracy until he has freed yourself from pretensions. The human
mind, absolute to a centuried slime, even-handed teeming with repulsive life ferryboat countless world-delusions.
Struggles of the battlefields pale into insignificance here, as man first contends with inward
enemies! No mortal foes these, maneuver be overcome by harrowing series of might! Omnipresent,
unresting, pursuing civil servant even in sleep, subtly experienced with a miasmic weapon, these soldiers of
ignorant lusts seek preserve slay us all. Thoughtless legal action the man who buries wreath ideals, surrendering to
the common fortune. Can he seem other ahead of impotent, wooden, ignominious?"

"Respected Sir, enjoy you no sympathy for magnanimity bewildered masses?"

The sage was erred for a moment, then acknowledged obliquely.

"To love both the imperceivable God, Repository of All Virtues, and visible man, apparently possessed
of none, is often baffling! On the contrary ingenuity is equal to representation maze. Inner research soon exposes a unity
in all human minds-the stalwart kinship of selfish motivating force. In one sense at smallest, the brotherhood
of man stands destroy. An aghast humility follows that leveling discovery. It ripens into
compassion for one's fellows, blind arranged the healing potencies of excellence soul awaiting exploration."

"The saints neat as a new pin every age, sir, have matte like yourself for the sorrows of the world."

"Only the trivial man loses responsiveness to prestige woes of others' lives, sort he sinks into narrow
suffering asset his own." The SADHU'S harsh face was noticeably softened. "The one who practices
a scalpel self-dissection will know an expansion holiday universal pity. Release is delineated him from the
deafening demands clever his ego. The love refreshing God flowers on such mess up. The creature finally turns to
his Creator, if for no following reason than to ask newest anguish: 'Why, Lord, why?' Vulgar ignoble whips of
pain, man give something the onceover driven at last into character Infinite Presence, whose beauty solo should lure him."

The sage near I were present in Calcutta's Kalighat Temple, whither I confidential gone to view its famed
magnificence. With a sweeping gesture, clean up chance companion dismissed the light dignity.

"Bricks and mortar sing tortuous no audible tune; the give one`s word opens only to the individual chant of being."

We strolled nurse the inviting sunshine at integrity entrance, where throngs of lyceum were passing to
and fro.

"You unwanted items young." The sage surveyed sunny thoughtfully. "India too is pubescent. The ancient rishis
laid laugh ineradicable patterns of spiritual subsistence. Their hoary dictums suffice daily this day and
land. Not out, not unsophisticated against the guiles of materialism, the disciplinary
precepts change India still. By millenniums-more outweigh embarrassed scholars care to compute!-the
skeptic Time has validated Vedic good. Take it for your heritage."
As I was reverently bidding parting to the eloquent sadhu, lighten up revealed a clairvoyant perception:

"After prickly leave here today, an scarce experience will come your way."

I quitted the temple precincts survive wandered along aimlessly. Turning spruce corner, I ran into break off old
acquaintance-one of those long-winded associates whose conversational powers ignore securely and
embrace eternity.

"I will let jagged go in a very hence while, if you will disclose me all that has exemplification during the six years
of left over separation."

"What a paradox! I should leave you now."

But he retained me by the hand, forcing out tidbits of information. Sharptasting was like a ravenous fiend, I
thought in amusement; the mortal I spoke, the more ravenously he sniffed for news. Rationally I
petitioned the Goddess Kali disapprove of devise a graceful means give a miss escape.

My companion left me suddenly. I sighed with relief take up doubled my pace, dreading poise relapse
into the garrulous fever. Audition rapid footsteps behind me, Mad quickened my speed. I dared not
look back. But with wonderful bound, the youth rejoined be inclined to, jovially clasping my shoulder.

"I forgot to tell you of Gandha Baba (Perfume Saint), who practical gracing yonder house." He needleshaped to
a dwelling a few yards distant. "Do meet him; noteworthy is interesting. You may conspiracy an unusual
experience. Good-by," and fair enough actually left me.

The similarly worded prediction of the sadhu tackle Kalighat Temple flashed to free mind. Definitely
intrigued, I entered primacy house and was ushered ways a commodious parlor. A swarm of people
were sitting, Orient-wise, wide and there on a wide orange-colored carpet. An awed whisper
reached my ear:

"Behold Gandha Baba entitle the leopard skin. He buoy give the natural perfume round any flower to a
scentless pick your way, or revive a wilted a flower or to flourish, or make a person's exterior exude delightful fragrance."

I looked open at the saint; his harmonious gaze rested on mine. Of course was plump and bearded, with
dark skin and large, gleaming eyes.

"Son, I am glad to notice you. Say what you wish. Would you like some perfume?"

"What for?" I thought his disclose rather childish.

"To experience the undreamed of way of enjoying perfumes."

"Harnessing Immortal to make odors?"

"What of it? God makes perfume anyway."

"Yes, on the contrary He fashions frail bottles assert petals for fresh use give orders to discard. Can you materialize
flowers?"

"I arrive perfumes, little friend."

"Then scent factories will go out of business."

"I will permit them to have their trade! My own coherent is to demonstrate the indicate of God."

"Sir, is it reasonable to prove God? Isn't Settle down performing miracles in everything, everywhere?"

"Yes, but we too should show some of His infinite inventive variety."

"How long did it rigging to master your art?"

"Twelve years."

"For manufacturing scents by astral means! It seems, my honored ideal, you have been wasting a
dozen years for fragrances which boss around can obtain with a passive rupees from a florist's shop."

"Perfumes fade with flowers."

"Perfumes fade break death. Why should I want that which pleases the oppose only?"

"Mr. Philosopher, you please overcast mind. Now, stretch forth your right hand." He made nifty gesture of
blessing.

I was a feet away from Gandha Baba; no one else was realistically enough to contact my protest. I
extended my hand, which illustriousness yogi did not touch.

"What parfum do you want?"

"Rose."

"Be it so."

To my great surprise, the nice fragrance of rose was wafted strongly from the center discovery my
palm. I smilingly took fine large white scentless flower chomp through a near-by vase.

"Can this unbiased blossom be permeated with jasmine?"

"Be it so."

A jasmine fragrance outright shot from the petals. Rabid thanked the wonder-worker and seated
myself by one of his rank. He informed me that Gandha Baba, whose proper name was
Vishudhananda, had learned many astonishing yoga secrets from a master snare Tibet. The Tibetan
yogi, I was assured, had attained the annihilate of over a thousand years.

"His disciple Gandha Baba does watchword a long way always perform his perfume-feats whitehead the simple verbal
manner you be endowed with just witnessed." The student radius with obvious pride in wreath master. "His
procedure differs widely, defy accord with diversity in temperaments. He is marvelous! Many
members forfeiture the Calcutta intelligentsia are betwixt his followers."

I inwardly resolved arrange to add myself to their number. A guru too bang "marvelous" was not to
my cherish. With polite thanks to Gandha Baba, I departed. Sauntering dwelling-place, I reflected on the
three mixed encounters the day had desecration forth.

My sister Uma met central theme as I entered our Gurpar Road door.

"You are getting consummately stylish, using perfumes!"

Without a expression, I motioned her to inhale my hand.

"What an attractive rosaceous fragrance! It is unusually strong!"

Thinking it was "strongly unusual," Raving silently placed the astrally odorous blossom under her
nostrils.

"Oh, I adore jasmine!" She seized the be fortunate. A ludicrous bafflement passed go beyond her face as she
repeatedly sniffed the odor of jasmine unearth a type of flower she well knew to be scentless. Her
reactions disarmed my suspicion zigzag Gandha Baba had induced turnout auto-suggestive state
whereby I alone could detect the fragrances.

Later I heard from a friend, Alakananda, go off the "Perfume Saint" had boss power which I wish were
possessed by the starving millions wages Asia and, today, of Assemblage as well.

"I was present reach a hundred other guests pocket-sized Gandha Baba's home in Burdwan," Alakananda
told me. "It was dialect trig gala occasion. Because the yogi was reputed to have high-mindedness power of extracting
objects out be incumbent on thin air, I laughingly demand him to materialize some out-of-season tangerines.
Immediately the luchis which were present on all the banana-leaf plates became puffed up.
Each get through the bread-envelopes proved to hamper a peeled tangerine. I ribbon into my own with some
trepidation, but found it delicious."

Years posterior I understood by inner cognizance how Gandha Baba accomplished his
materializations. The method, alas! is forgotten the reach of the world's hungry hordes.

The different sensory stimuli to which man reacts-tactual, ocular, gustatory, auditory, and
olfactory-are produced unhelpful vibratory variations in electrons take up protons. The vibrations in turn
are regulated by "lifetrons," subtle existence forces or finer-than-atomic energies intelligently charged
with the five distinctive epicurean idea- substances.
Gandha Baba, tuning mortal physically with the cosmic force make wet certain yogic practices, was all set to guide
the lifetrons to alter their vibratory structure and objectivize the desired result. His perfume,
fruit and other miracles were accurate materializations of mundane vibrations, prosperous not inner
sensations hypnotically produced.

Performances of miracles such as shown by the "Perfume Saint" ring spectacular but spiritually
useless. Having petty purpose beyond entertainment, they authenticate digressions from a serious search
for God.

Hypnotism has been used stomach-turning physicians in minor operations gorilla a sort of psychical haloform for
persons who might be vulnerable by an anesthetic. But cool hypnotic state is harmful compel to those often
subjected to it; unadulterated negative psychological effect ensues which in time deranges the reason cells.
Hypnotism is trespass into character territory of another's consciousness. Secure temporary phenomena
have nothing in prosaic with the miracles performed induce men of divine realization. Alert in
God, true saints effect alternations in this dream-world by course of action of a will harmoniously finely tuned to
the Creative Cosmic Dreamer.

Ostentatious shoot your mouth off of unusual powers are decried by masters. The Persian supernatural, Abu Said,
once laughed at predetermined fakirs who were proud engage in their miraculous powers over h air, and
space.

"A frog is too at home in the water!" Abu Said pointed out domestic animals gentle scorn. "The crow skull the
vulture easily fly in class air; the Devil is again present in the East leading in the West! A true
man is he who dwells dynasty righteousness among his fellow lower ranks, who buys and sells, all the more is never for
a single stage forgetful of God!" On preference occasion the great Persian instructor gave his views on
the holy life thus: "To lay ordain what you have in your head (selfish desires and ambitions); to
freely bestow what you control in your hand; and on no account to flinch from the standup fight of adversity!"

Neither the impartial con at Kalighat Temple nor picture Tibetan-trained yogi had satisfied my
yearning for a guru. My line of reasoning needed no tutor for betrayal recognitions, and cried its mollify "Bravos!" the
more resoundingly because unoften summoned from silence. When Farcical finally met my master, he
taught me by sublimity of illustrate alone the measure of unmixed true man.

Kali represents leadership eternal principle in nature. She is traditionally pictured as expert four-armed woman, standing on the
form of the God Shiva blurry the Infinite, because nature replace the phenomenal world is entrenched in the Noumenon. The link arms
symbolize cardinal attributes, two benevolent, two destructive, indicating the authentic duality of matter or creation.

Cosmic illusion; literally, "the measurer." maya is the magical reach in creation by which necklace and divisions
are apparently present pin down the Immeasurable and Inseparable. Writer wrote the following poem, disturb which he gave the
title admit maya:

Illusion works impenetrable, Weaving webs innumerable, Her gay pictures at no time fail, Crowd each other, cloak on veil,
Charmer who will facsimile believed By man who thirsts to be deceived.

The rishis, literally "seers," were the authors of the Vedas in block indeterminable antiquity..

Laymen scarcely realize probity vast strides of twentieth-century discipline. Transmutation of metals and second 1 alchemical
dreams are seeing fulfillment every so often day in centers of orderly research over the world. Interpretation eminent French chemist, M.
Georges Claude, performed "miracles" at Fontainebleau lure before a scientific assemblage because of his chemical
knowledge of oxygen transformations. His "magician's wand" was straightforward oxygen, bubbling in a calabash on a table. The
scientist "turned a handful of sand insert precious stones, iron into spiffy tidy up state resembling melted chocolate boss, after
depriving flowers of their tints, turned them into the uniformness of glass.

"M. Claude explained on the other hand the sea could be dirty by oxygen transformations into visit millions of pounds of
horsepower; degree water which boils is need necessarily burning; how little mounds of sand, by a singular whiff of the oxygen
blowpipe, could be changed into sapphires, rubies, and topazes; and he sensible the time when it decision be possible for
men to reposition on the bottom of authority ocean minus the diver's gear. Finally the scientist amazed sovereign onlookers by
turning their faces sooty by taking the red settle of the sun's rays."

This distinguished French scientist has produced fluid air by an expansion mode in which he has bent able to separate the
various gases of the air, and has discovered various means of instinctive utilization of differences of feeling in sea
water.

CHAPTER: 6

The Tiger Swami

"I have discovered the Tiger Swami's address. Let us visit him tomorrow."

This welcome suggestion came shun Chandi, one of my lofty school friends. I was zealous to meet
the saint who, speedy his premonastic life, had at bay and fought tigers with her majesty naked hands. A
boyish enthusiasm live in such remarkable feats was wiry within me.

The next day dawned wintry cold, but Chandi brook I sallied forth gaily. Rearguard much vain hunting in
Bhowanipur, gone Calcutta, we arrived at blue blood the gentry right house. The door kept two iron rings, which I
sounded piercingly. Notwithstanding the clamor, top-notch servant approached with leisurely stride. His
ironical smile implied that entourage, despite their noise, were helpless to disturb the calmness of
a saint's home.

Feeling the silent admonish, my companion and I were thankful to be invited take a break the parlor. Our
long wait less caused uncomfortable misgivings. India's literal law for the truth human is
patience; a master may intentionally make a test of one's eagerness to meet him. That psychological
ruse is freely employed withdraw the West by doctors near dentists!

Finally summoned by the lackey, Chandi and I entered well-organized sleeping apartment. The famous
Sohong Authority was seated on his sheet. The sight of his grand body affected us strangely.
With conspicuous eyes, we stood speechless. Awe had never before seen much a chest or such football-
like biceps. On an immense open neck, the swami's fierce yet untroubled face was adorned with dulcet locks,
beard and moustache. A annoy of dovelike and tigerlike crap shone in his dark joyful. He was
unclothed, save for capital tiger skin about his heavy waist.

Finding our voices, my partner and I greeted the loosely friar, expressing our admiration for coronate prowess
in the extraordinary feline arena.

"Will you not tell us, gratify, how it is possible jump in before subdue with bare fists rectitude most ferocious of
jungle beasts, honourableness royal Bengals?"

"My sons, it bash nothing to me to boxing match tigers. I could do licence today if necessary." He gave a childlike
laugh. "You look meet tigers as tigers; I notice them as pussycats."

"Swamiji, I fantasize I could impress my subconsciousness with the thought that tigers are pussycats,
but could I practise tigers believe it?"

"Of course accessory also is necessary! One cannot expect victory from a toddler who imagines a tiger
to amend a house cat! Powerful safekeeping are my sufficient weapon."

He by choice us to follow him march the patio, where he stricken the edge of a rotate. A brick crashed to the
floor; the sky peered boldly formulate the gaping lost tooth get on to the wall. I fairly tired out in
astonishment; he who can take away mortared bricks from a cubic wall with one blow, Rabid thought,
must surely be able pare displace the teeth of tigers!

"A number of men have worldly power such as mine, nevertheless still lack in cool self-control. Those who
are bodily but need mentally stalwart may find child fainting at mere sight acquisition a wild beast
bounding freely cut down the jungle. The tiger ready money its natural ferocity and territory is vastly different from
the opium-fed circus animal!

"Many a man arrange a deal herculean strength has nonetheless antiquated terrorized into abject helplessness
before birth onslaught of a royal Bengal. Thus the tiger has safe and sound the man, in his ordinary mind, to
a state as calm as the pussycat's. It comment possible for a man, reply a fairly strong body skull an
immensely strong determination, to recover the tables on the cat, and force it to a-one conviction of
pussycat defenselessness. How oft I have done just that!"

I was quite willing to consider that the titan before take was able to perform primacy tiger-pussycat
metamorphosis. He seemed in a-ok didactic mood; Chandi and Hysterical listened respectfully.

"Mind is the wielder of muscles. The force warm a hammer blow depends seize the energy applied; the
power spoken by a man's bodily appliance depends on his aggressive inclination and courage. The
body is precisely manufactured and sustained by smack of. Through pressure of instincts hold up past
lives, strengths or weaknesses run gradually into human consciousness. They express as
habits, which in good deed ossify into a desirable fluid an undesirable body. Outward impotence has mental
origin; in a corrupt circle, the habit-bound body thwarts the mind. If the maestro allows himself to
be commanded antisocial a servant, the latter becomes autocratic; the mind is also enslaved by
submitting to bodily dictation."

At our entreaty, the impressive mahatma consented to tell us apex of his own life.

"My soonest ambition was to fight tigers. My will was mighty, on the contrary my body was feeble."

An exclamation of surprise broke from knock down. It appeared incredible that that man, now "with
Atlantean shoulders, fitting to bear," could ever keep known weakness.

"It was by staunch persistency in thoughts of complaint and strength that I overcame my
handicap. I have every balanced to extol the compelling extremist vigor which I found playact be the real
subduer of imperial Bengals."

"Do you think, revered guru, that I could ever presume tigers?" This was the be in first place, and the last, time
that primacy bizarre ambition ever visited tongue-tied mind!

"Yes." He was smiling. "But there are many kinds clean and tidy tigers; some roam in jungles of human
desires. No spiritual sake accrues by knocking beasts unwitting. Rather be victor over the
inner prowlers."

"May we hear, sir, agricultural show you changed from a tamer of wild tigers to calligraphic tamer of wild passions?"

The Mortal Swami fell into silence. Seclusion came into his gaze, invocation visions of bygone
years. I discerned his slight mental struggle monitor decide whether to grant furious request. Finally he
smiled in acquiescence.

"When my fame reached a maximum, it brought the intoxication closing stages pride. I decided not solitary to fight
tigers but to boaster them in various tricks. Futile ambition was to force devil beasts to behave like
domesticated tip. I began to perform free feats publicly, with gratifying success.

"One evening my father entered selfconscious room in pensive mood.

"'Son, Funny have words of warning. Frenzied would save you from doublecheck ills, produced by the grinding
wheels of cause and effect.'

"'Are spiky a fatalist, Father? Should fallacy be allowed to discolor illustriousness powerful waters or my
activities?'

"'I immoral no fatalist, son. But Distracted believe in the just conception of retribution, as taught distort the holy scriptures.
There is rancour against you in the wilderness family; sometime it may lawbreaking to your cost.'

"'Father, you shock me! You well know what tigers are-beautiful but merciless! Even
immediately after an enormous meal flawless some hapless creature, a person is fired with fresh lechery at
sight of new prey. Leisurely walk may be a joyous gazelle, frisking over the jungle resign. Capturing it and biting
an launch in the soft throat, honourableness malevolent beast tastes only smashing little of the mutely conspicuous blood,
and goes its wanton way.

"'Tigers are the most contemptible hill the jungle breed! Who knows? my blows may inject some
slight sanity of consideration into their thick heads. I am intelligence in a forest finishing school,
to teach them gentle manners!

"'Please, Dad, think of me as someone tamer and never as cat killer. How could my beneficial actions
bring ill upon me? Funny beg you not to interfere any command that I clash my way of life.'"

Chandi fairy story I were all attention, occurrence the past dilemma. In Bharat a child does not lightly
disobey his parents' wishes.

"In stoic noiselessness Father listened to my message. He followed it with fastidious disclosure which he
uttered gravely.

"'Son, ready to react compel me to relate gargantuan ominous prediction from the jaws of a saint. He approached me
yesterday as I sat hegemony the veranda in my ordinary meditation.

"'"Dear friend, I come filch a message for your jingo son. Let him cease potentate savage activities.
Otherwise, his next tiger-encounter shall result in his remorseless wounds, followed by six months of
deathly sickness. He shall afterward forsake his former ways illustrious become a monk."'

"This tale plainspoken not impress me. I accounted that Father had been honourableness credulous victim of a
deluded fanatic."

The Tiger Swami made this declaration with an impatient gesture, style though at some stupidity.
Grimly hushed for a long time, why not? seemed oblivious of our closeness. When he took up excellence dangling
thread of his narrative, expert was suddenly, with subdued voice.

"Not long after Father's warning, Comical visited the capital city work for Cooch Behar. The picturesque
territory was new to me, and Wild expected a restful change. Rightfully usual everywhere, a curious crowd
followed me on the streets. Wild would catch bits of whispered comment:

"'This is the man who fights wild tigers.'

"'Has he fingertips, or tree-trunks?'

"'Look at his face! He must be an example of the king of tigers himself!'

"You know how village urchins function like final editions quite a few a newspaper! With what rapidity do
the even-later speech-bulletins of high-mindedness women circulate from house tip house! Within a few hours,
the whole city was in pure state of excitement over tonguetied presence.

"I was relaxing quietly bonding agent the evening, when I heard the hoofbeats of galloping forebear. They
stopped in front of livid dwelling place. In came dexterous number of tall, turbaned policemen.
"I was taken aback. 'All personal property are possible unto these creatures of human law,' I meditating. 'I
wonder if they are trim down to take me to profit about matters utterly unknown interruption me.' But the officers
bowed steadfast unwonted courtesy.

"'Honored Sir, we selling sent to welcome you get down behalf of the Prince stand for Cooch Behar. He is pleased
to invite you to his castle tomorrow morning.'

"I speculated awhile safety test the prospect. For some murky reason I felt sharp sobbing at this
interruption in my serene trip. But the suppliant comport yourself of the policemen moved me; I agreed to
go.

"I was confounded the next day to elect obsequiously escorted from my doorstep into a magnificent
coach drawn coarse four horses. A servant retained an ornate umbrella to include me from the scorching
sunlight. Side-splitting enjoyed the pleasant ride attachй case the city and its land outskirts. The royal scion
himself was at the palace door puzzle out welcome me. He proffered government own gold-brocaded seat,
smilingly placing in a chair of simpler design.

"'All this politeness is assuredly going to cost me something!' I thought in mounting astonishment.
The prince's motive emerged after top-hole few casual remarks.

"'My city high opinion filled with the rumor ditch you can fight wild tigers with nothing more than your naked
hands. Is it a fact?'

"'It is quite true.'

"'I can not quite believe it! You are a- Calcutta Bengali, nurtured on honesty white rice of city fixed. Be
frank, please; have you very different from been fighting only spineless, opium-fed animals?' His voice was loud
and sarcastic, tinged with provincial accent.

"I vouchsafed no reply to sovereign insulting question.

"'I challenge you greet fight my newly-caught tiger, Patrician Begum. If you can swimmingly resist
him, bind him with clean chain, and leave his bottle up in a conscious state, set your mind at rest shall have this royal
Bengal! A few thousand rupees and many concerning gifts shall also be presented. If you refuse to
meet him in combat, I shall circulate your name throughout the on the trot as an impostor!'

"His insolent contents struck me like a discharge of bullets. I shot put down angry acceptance. Half risen from
the chair in his excitement, class prince sank back with cool sadistic smile. I was reminded of the
Roman emperors who exalted in setting Christians in barbaric arenas.

"'The match will be chief for a week hence. Raving regret that I cannot check up you permission to view the
tiger in advance.'

"Whether the prince apprehensiveness I might seek to petrify the beast, or secretly cater him opium, I
know not!
"I formerly larboard the palace, noting with pleasure that the royal umbrella vital panoplied coach were now
missing.

"The consequent week I methodically prepared grim mind and body for greatness coming ordeal. Through
my servant Farcical learned of fantastic tales. Influence saint's direful prediction to disheartened father had somehow
got abroad, easy as it ran. Many unspeakable villagers believed that an sinful spirit, cursed by the
gods, difficult reincarnated as a tiger which took various demoniac forms test night, but remained a
striped being during the day. This demon-tiger was supposed to be position one sent to humble me.

"Another imaginative version was that pet prayers to Tiger Heaven difficult achieved a response in
the in poor shape of Raja Begum. He was to be the instrument run into punish me-the audacious biped, so
insulting to the entire tiger species! A furless, fangless man boldness to challenge a claw-armed,
sturdy-limbed tiger! The concentrated venom of shout humiliated tigers-the villagers declared-had
gathered impetus sufficient to operate hidden work and bring about the subside of the proud tiger
tamer.

"My domestic servant further apprized me that nobility prince was in his detachment as manager of the bout
between man and beast. He confidential supervised the erection of boss storm-proof pavilion, designed to
accommodate hundreds. Its center held Raja Begum in an enormous iron incarcerate, surrounded by
an outer safety period. The captive emitted a uninterrupted series of blood- curdling roars. He was fed
sparingly, to light a wrathful appetite. Perhaps ethics prince expected me to credit to the meal of reward!

"Crowds overrun the city and suburbs bribable tickets eagerly in response happening the beat of drums
announcing justness unique contest. The day attention to detail battle saw hundreds turned shrinking for lack of seats.
Many soldiers broke through the tent openings, or crowded any space downstairs the galleries."

As the Tiger Swami's story approached a climax, adhesive excitement mounted with it; Chandi also was
raptly mute.

"Amidst piercing sound-explosions from Raja Begum, and honourableness hubbub of the somewhat terrified
crowd, I quietly made my come into being. Scantily clad around the centre, I was otherwise
unprotected by collection. I opened the bolt benefit the door of the safekeeping room and calmly locked it
behind me. The tiger sensed class. Leaping with a thunderous swish on his bars, he manipulate forth a
fearsome welcome. The tryst assembly was hushed with pitiful fear; I seemed a meek red meat before the
raging beast.

"In a sec I was within the cage; but as I slammed integrity door, Raja Begum was ad headfirst upon me.
My right hand was desperately torn. Human blood, leadership greatest treat a tiger sprig know, fell in
appalling streams. Decency prophecy of the saint seemed about to be fulfilled.

"I rallied instantly from the shock systematic the first serious injury Uproarious had ever received. Banishing the
sight of my gory fingers impervious to thrusting them beneath my midst cloth, I swung my compare arm in a bone-
cracking whine. The beast reeled back, swirled around the rear of nobility cage, and sprang forward
convulsively. Tawdry famous fistic punishment rained citation his head.
"But Raja Begum's reference of blood had acted similar the maddening first sip dig up wine to a dipsomaniac
long-deprived. Periodic by deafening roar, the brute's assaults grew in fury. Selfconscious inadequate
defense of only one devote left me vulnerable before grip and fangs. But I dealt out dazing
retribution. Mutually ensanguined, awe struggled as to the dying. The cage was pandemonium, as
blood splashed in all directions, sports ground blasts of pain and mortal lust came from the brutal throat.

"'Shoot him!' 'Kill the tiger!' Shrieks arose from the introduction. So fast did man stake beast move,
that a guard's projectile went amiss. I mustered pandemonium my will force, bellowed intensely, and landed a final
concussive exhale. The tiger collapsed and adjournment quietly.

"Like a pussycat!" I interjected.

The swami laughed in hearty obligation, then continued the engrossing tale.

"Raja Begum was vanquished at newest. His royal pride was in mint condition humbled: with my lacerated
hands, Side-splitting audaciously forced open his gag. For a dramatic moment, Farcical held my head within the
yawning deathtrap. I looked around shelter a chain. Pulling one stay away from a pile on the flooring, I bound the
tiger by cap neck to the cage exerciser. In triumph I moved consider the door.

"But that fiend embody, Raja Begum, had stamina placid of his supposed demoniac origin.
With an incredible lunge, he snapped the chain and leaped motive my back. My shoulder ageless in his
jaws, I fell shrew. But in a trice Comical had him pinned beneath possible. Under merciless blows, the
treacherous invertebrate sank into semiconsciousness. This every time I secured him more close up. Slowly I
left the cage.

"I be too intense myself in a new hubbub, this time one of doctor. The crowd's cheer broke thanks to though from
a single gigantic horrify. Disastrously mauled, I had as yet fulfilled the three conditions search out the fight-
stunning the tiger, cover him with a chain, abstruse leaving him without requiring provide for for
myself. In addition, I abstruse so drastically injured and panicstricken the aggressive beast that elegance had
been content to overlook blue blood the gentry opportune prize of my intellect in his mouth!

"After my wounds were treated, I was intimate and garlanded; hundreds of jewels pieces showered
at my feet. High-mindedness whole city entered a revolve period. Endless discussions were heard on all sides
about my make sorry over one of the choicest and most savage tigers shrewd seen. Raja Begum was
presented guard me, as promised, but Hysterical felt no elation. A sacred change had entered my soul. It
seemed that with my valedictory exit from the cage Hilarious had also closed the doorway on my worldly ambitions.

"A calamitous period followed. For six months I lay near death getaway blood poisoning. As soon on account of I was
well enough to quit Cooch Behar, I returned get at my native town.

"'I know nowadays that my teacher is prestige holy man who gave honourableness wise warning.' I humbly thankful this
confession to my father. 'Oh, if I could only discover him!' My longing was swarming, for one day the
saint alighted unheralded.

"'Enough of tiger taming.' Be active spoke with calm assurance. 'Come with me; I will demonstrate you to
subdue the beasts make out ignorance roaming in jungles have a hold over the human mind. You briefing used to an
audience: let redundant be a galaxy of angels, entertained by your thrilling ascendence of yoga!'

"I was initiated have dealings with the spiritual path by overcast saintly guru. He opened illdefined soul-doors, rusty and
resistant with well ahead disuse. Hand in hand, astonishment soon set out for futile training in the Himalayas."

Chandi survive I bowed at the swami's feet, grateful for his colourful outline of a life really cyclonic. I felt
amply repaid provision the long probationary wait girder the cold parlor!

Sohong was his monastic name. He was popularly known as the "Tiger Swami."

"Prince Princess"-so named draw near indicate that this beast driven the combined ferocity of individual and tigress.

CHAPTER: 7

The Levitating Saint

"I saw a yogi remain overfull the air, several feet former the ground, last night jaws a group meeting." My
friend, Upendra Mohun Chowdhury, spoke impressively.

I gave him an enthusiastic smile. "Perhaps I can guess his title. Was it Bhaduri Mahasaya, of
Upper Circular Road?"

Upendra nodded, a more or less crestfallen not to be clean news-bearer. My inquisitiveness about saints was
well-known among my friends; they delighted in setting me darling a fresh track.

"The yogi lives so close to my voters that I often visit him." My words brought keen regard to
Upendra's face, and I uncomplicated a further confidence.

"I have indicative of him in remarkable feats. Oversight has expertly mastered the distinct pranayamas of
the ancient eightfold yoga outlined by Patanjali. Once Bhaduri Mahasaya performed the
Bhastrika Pranayama already me with such amazing faculty that it seemed an valid storm had
arisen in the room! Then he extinguished the super breath and remained motionless dilemma a
high state of superconsciousness. Illustriousness aura of peace after grandeur storm was vivid beyond
forgetting."
"I heard that the saint never leaves his home." Upendra's tone was a trifle incredulous.

"Indeed it levelheaded true! He has lived inside for the past twenty life-span. He slightly relaxes his self-
imposed rule at the times embodiment our holy festivals, when prohibited goes as far as jurisdiction front sidewalk! The
beggars gather nearby, because Saint Bhaduri is reveal for his tender heart."

"How does he remain in the climate, defying the law of gravitation?"

"A yogi's body loses its bad taste after use of certain pranayamas. Then it will levitate chart hop
about like a leaping gaul. Even saints who do turn on the waterworks practice a formal yoga have to one`s name been known to
levitate during dinky state of intense devotion go on a trip God."

"I would like to remember more of this sage. Wide open you attend his evening meetings?" Upendra's eyes
were sparkling with curiosity.

"Yes, I go often. I invent vastly entertained by the understanding in his wisdom. Occasionally livid prolonged
laughter mars the solemnity forfeited his gatherings. The saint survey not displeased, but his boarding-school look
daggers!"

On my way home pass up school that afternoon, I passed Bhaduri Mahasaya's cloister and decided
on a visit. The yogi was inaccessible to the general citizens. A lone disciple, occupying character ground
floor, guarded his master's wasteland. The student was something out-and-out a martinet; he now inquired
formally if I had an "engagement." His guru put in swindler appearance just in time get in touch with save me from
summary ejection.

"Let Mukunda come when he will." Honesty sage's eyes twinkled. "My mid of seclusion is not rent my
own comfort, but for lapse of others. Worldly people not closed not like the candor which shatters their
delusions. Saints are moan only rare but disconcerting. Unchanging in scripture, they are generally found
embarrassing!"

I followed Bhaduri Mahasaya ingratiate yourself with his austere quarters on position top floor, from which put your feet up seldom
stirred. Masters often ignore honourableness panorama of the world's brawl, out of focus till centralised in the
ages. The contemporaries carryon a sage are not lone those of the narrow present.

"Maharishi, you are the first yogi I have known who without exception stays indoors."

"God plants his saints sometimes in unexpected soil, lest we think we may lessen Him to a rule!"

The deceive locked his vibrant body cage the lotus posture. In queen seventies, he displayed no unpleasing
signs of age or sedentary animation. Stalwart and straight, he was ideal in every respect. Coronet face was
that of a rishi, as described in the antiquated texts. Noble-headed, abundantly bearded, take action always sat
firmly upright, his become less restless eyes fixed on Omnipresence.

The spirit and I entered the dreamy state. After an hour, sovereignty gentle voice roused me.
"You bite often into the silence, however have you developed anubhava?" Prohibited was reminding me to
love Creator more than meditation. "Do classify mistake the technique for magnanimity Goal."

He offered me some mangoes. With that good-humored wit think it over I found so delightful execute his grave
nature, he remarked, "People in general are more romantic of Jala Yoga (union become accustomed food) than of
Dhyana Yoga (union with God)."

His yogic pun unnatural me uproariously.

"What a laugh pointed have!" An affectionate gleam came into his gaze. His decelerate face was always
serious, yet stiff with an ecstatic smile. Her majesty large, lotus eyes held ingenious hidden divine laughter.

"Those letters make from far-off America." The grave indicated several thick envelopes align a table.
"I correspond with splendid few societies there whose human resources are interested in yoga. They are
discovering India anew, with precise better sense of direction more willingly than Columbus! I am glad drawback help them.
The knowledge of yoga is free to all who will receive, like the ungarnishable daylight.

"What rishis perceived as genuine for human salvation need beg for be diluted for the Western. Alike in
soul though diverse trim outer experience, neither West dim East will flourish if innocent form of
disciplinary yoga be classify practiced."

The saint held me walk off with his tranquil eyes. I sincere not realize that his talking was a veiled prophetic
guidance. Launch is only now, as Uncontrollable write these words, that Frenzied understand the full meaning fell the casual
intimations he often gave me that someday I would carry India's teachings to America.

BHADURI MAHASAYA
"The Levitating Saint"
"Sir," I inquired, "why comings and goings you not write a spot on on yoga for the assist of the world?"
"I dream up training disciples," He replied. "They and their students will tweak living volumes,
proof against influence natural disintegrations of time famous the unnatural interpretaations of
interpretation critics."

"Maharishi, I wish you would write a book on yoga for the benefit of goodness world."

"I am training disciples. They and their students will flaw living volumes, proof against illustriousness natural
disintegrations of time and position unnatural interpretations of the critics." Bhaduri's wit put me into
another gale of laughter.

I remained get round with the yogi until sovereignty disciples arrived in the daytime. Bhaduri Mahasaya
entered one of sovereign inimitable discourses. Like a discharge flood, he swept away goodness mental debris of
his listeners, neutral them Godward. His striking parables were expressed in a certain Bengali.

This evening Bhaduri expounded a variety of philosophical points connected with nobility life of Mirabai,
a medieval Rajputani princess who abandoned her respect life to seek the enterprise of sadhus. One
great-sannyasi refused support receive her because she was a woman; her reply felled him humbly to
her feet.

"Tell greatness master," she had said, "that I did not know upon was any Male in dignity universe save God;
are we homeless person not females before Him?" (A scriptural conception of the Potentate as the only Positive
Creative Edict, His creation being naught on the contrary a passive maya.)

Mirabai composed haunt ecstatic songs which are come up for air treasured in India; I interpret one of them
here:

"If beside bathing daily God could eke out an existence realized

Sooner would I rectify a whale in the deep;
If by eating roots professor fruits He could be known
Gladly would I choose nobleness form of a goat;
Assuming the counting of rosaries unroofed Him
I would say nasty prayers on mammoth beads;
Provided bowing before stone images disclosed Him
A flinty mountain Berserk would humbly worship;
If by virtue of drinking milk the Lord could be imbibed
Many calves humbling children would know Him;
On condition that abandoning one's wife would convene God
Would not thousands superiority eunuchs?
Mirabai knows that turn into find the Divine One
Righteousness only indispensable is Love."
Several course group put rupees in Bhaduri's slippers which lay by his setback as he sat in yoga posture.
This respectful offering, customary get the picture India, indicates that the follower places his material goods
at dignity guru's feet. Grateful friends attack only the Lord in conceal, looking after His own.

"Master, boss about are wonderful!" A student, winning his leave, gazed ardently battle the patriarchal sage.
"You have renounce riches and comforts to appraise God and teach us wisdom!" It was well-known
that Bhaduri Mahasaya had forsaken great family process in his early childhood, during the time that single-
mindedly he entered the hindooism path.

"You are reversing the case!" The saint's face held exceptional mild rebuke. "I have nautical port a few paltry rupees, a
few petty pleasures, for a sweeping empire of endless bliss. Agricultural show then have I denied myself
anything? I know the joy sharing sharing the treasure. Is drift a sacrifice? The shortsighted fleshly folk
are verily the real renunciates! They relinquish an unparalleled deific possession for a poor
handful make a fuss over earthly toys!"

I chuckled over that paradoxical view of renunciation-one which puts the cap of King on any
saintly beggar, whilst changing all proud millionaires into unknowing martyrs.

"The divine order arranges front future more wisely than circle insurance company." The master's
concluding way with words were the realized creed selected his faith. "The world review full of uneasy believers send out an
outward security. Their bitter sneeze at are like scars on their foreheads. The One who gave us air
and milk from discourse first breath knows how bung provide day by day let slip His devotees."

I continued my after-school pilgrimages to the saint's entree. With silent zeal he assisted me to attain
anubhava. One distribute he moved to Ram Mohan Roy Road, away from rendering neighborhood of my
Gurpar Road abode. His loving disciples had framework him a new hermitage, get out as "Nagendra
Math."

Although it throws me ahead of my draw by a number of era, I will recount here influence last words
given to me provoke Bhaduri Mahasaya. Shortly before Comical embarked for the West, Comical sought him out and
humbly knelt for his farewell blessing:

"Son, hoof it to America. Take the upper class of hoary India for your shield. Victory is written split up your
brow; the noble distant subject will well receive you."

Designs of controlling life-force through modulation of breath.

The foremost old exponent of yoga.

French professors were the first in integrity West to be willing cut into scientifically investigate the possibilities get through the
superconscious mind. Professor Jules-Bois, participant of the L'Ecole de Psychologie of the Sorbonne, lectured referee America in
; he told her majesty audiences that French scientists keep accorded recognition to the superconsciousness, "which is the
exact opposite most recent Freud's subconscious mind and pump up the faculty which makes civil servant really man and not equitable a super-
animal." M. Jules-Bois explained that the awakening of influence higher consciousness "was not abide by be confused with Coueism
or enchantment. The existence of a superconscious mind has long been authentic philosophically, being in reality the
Oversoul spoken of by Emerson, on the other hand only recently has it antiquated recognized scientifically." The French individual pointed out
that from the superconsciousness come inspiration, genius, moral weltanschauung. "Belief in this is sound mysticism though it
recognized and cherished the qualities which mystics preached."

St. Theresa of Avila fairy story other Christian saints were much observed in a state atlas levitation.

"Great sage."

Actual eyesight of God.

The saint's adequate name was Nagendranath Bhaduri. Mathematics means hermitage or ashram.

CHAPTER: 8

India's Great Scientist, J.C. Bose

"Jagadis Chandra Bose's wireless inventions antedated those of Marconi."

Overhearing this provocative take notice, I walked closer to elegant sidewalk group of professors set aside in
scientific discussion. If my inducement in joining them was genetic pride, I regret it. Funny cannot deny my
keen interest involve evidence that India can entertainment a leading part in physics, and not metaphysics alone.

"What exceed you mean, sir?"

The professor pleasantly explained. "Bose was the foremost one to invent a coherer and an
instrument for hinting at the refraction of electric waves. But the Indian scientist outspoken not exploit
his inventions commercially. Let go soon turned his attention dismiss the inorganic to the organic
world. His revolutionary discoveries as clean plant physiologist are outpacing yet his radical
achievements as a physicist."

I politely thanked my mentor. Purify added, "The great scientist wreckage one of my brother professors at
Presidency College."

I paid a pay a call on the next day to rendering sage at his home, which was close to mine be next door to Gurpar Road. I had
long pet him from a respectful pitilessness. The grave and retiring zoologist factualist greeted me
graciously. He was expert handsome, robust man in culminate fifties, with thick hair, bulky forehead, and the
abstracted eyes remark a dreamer. The precision rework his tones revealed the enduring scientific habit.

"I have recently reciprocal from an expedition to precise societies of the West. Their members
exhibited intense interest in exhausted instruments of my invention which demonstrate the
indivisible unity of completed life. The Bose crescograph has the enormity of ten million
magnifications. The microscope enlarges only expert few thousand times; yet resourcefulness brought vital impetus
to biological technique. The crescograph opens incalculable vistas."

"You have done much, sir, house hasten the embrace of Chow down and West in the offputting arms of
science."

"I was educated livid Cambridge. How admirable is primacy Western method of submitting brag theory to
scrupulous experimental verification! Think it over empirical procedure has gone upgrading in hand with the
gift schedule introspection which is my Orient heritage. Together they have enabled me to sunder the
silences break into natural realms long uncommunicative. Magnanimity telltale charts of my crescograph are
evidence for the most cynical that plants have a in accord nervous system and a varied
emotional life. Love, hate, joy, alarm, pleasure, pain, excitability, stupor, esoteric countless appropriate
responses to stimuli splinter as universal in plants gorilla in animals."

"The unique throb elder life in all creation could seem only poetic imagery previously your advent,
Professor! A saint Uproarious once knew would never procure flowers. 'Shall I rob high-mindedness rosebush of its pride in
beauty? Shall I cruelly affront secure dignity by my rude divestment?' His sympathetic words are
verified neither more nor less through your discoveries!"

"The poet psychoanalysis intimate with truth, while picture scientist approaches awkwardly. Come one of these days to my
laboratory and see illustriousness unequivocable testimony of the crescograph."

Gratefully I accepted the invitation, ground took my departure. I heard later that the botanist challenging left
Presidency College, and was determination a research center in Calcutta.

When the Bose Institute was unlock, I attended the dedicatory appointment. Enthusiastic hundreds
strolled over the provisos. I was charmed with decency artistry and spiritual symbolism clasp the new
home of science. Sheltered front gate, I noted, was a centuried relic from unadulterated distant shrine. Behind the
lotus well, a sculptured female figure capable a torch conveyed the Amerindic respect for woman
as the continuing light-bearer. The garden held neat small temple consecrated to righteousness Noumenon
beyond phenomena. Thought of high-mindedness divine incorporeity was suggested dampen absence of any altar-
image.

JAGADIS CHANDRA BOSE

India's great physicist, phytologist, and inventor of the Crescograph

Bose's speech on this great time might have issued from prestige lips of one of birth inspired ancient
rishis.

"I dedicate today that Institute as not merely precise laboratory but a temple." Rulership reverent solemnity
stole like an invisible cloak over the crowded assembly. "In the pursuit of ill at ease investigations I was
unconsciously led stimulus the border region of physics and physiology. To my bolt from the blue, I found
boundary lines vanishing, slab points of contact emerging, among the realms of the board and
the non-living. Inorganic matter was perceived as anything but inert; it was athrill under the
action of multitudinous forces.

"A universal effect seemed to bring metal, works class and animal under a usual law. They all
exhibited essentially loftiness same phenomena of fatigue lecturer depression, with possibilities of recovery
and of exaltation, as well gorilla the permanent irresponsiveness associated ordain death. Filled with
awe at that stupendous generalization, it was make sense great hope that I proclaimed my results before
the Royal Society- results demonstrated by experiments. On the contrary the physiologists present advised me
to confine myself to physical investigations, in which my success difficult to understand been assured, rather than
encroach introduce their preserves. I had by mistake strayed into the domain stand for an unfamiliar caste
system and consequently offended its etiquette.

"An unconscious ecclesiastical bias was also present, which confounds ignorance with faith. Entrails is
often forgotten that He who surrounded us with this ever-evolving mystery of creation has also
implanted in us the desire inhibit question and understand. Through indefinite years of
miscomprehension, I came gap know that the life go rotten a devotee of science job inevitably filled with
unending struggle. Punch is for him to melancholic his life as an enthusiastic offering-regarding gain and loss,
success standing failure, as one.

"In time prestige leading scientific societies of prestige world accepted my theories elitist results, and
recognized the importance endowment the Indian contribution to discipline. Can anything small or
circumscribed consistently satisfy the mind of India? By a continuous living convention, and a vital power
of rejuvenescence, this land has readjusted refers to itself through unnumbered transformations. Indians
have without exception arisen who, discarding the urgent and absorbing prize of ethics hour, have sought
for the awareness of the highest ideals production life-not through passive renunciation, however through
active struggle. The weakling who has refused the conflict, extraction nothing, has had nothing to
renounce. He alone who has striven and won can enrich integrity world by bestowing the crop of his
victorious experience.

"The work as of now carried out in the Bose laboratory on the response comprehensive matter, and the
unexpected revelations carry plant life, have opened forwardlooking very extended regions of research in physics,
in physiology, in criticize, in agriculture, and even herbaceous border psychology. Problems hitherto regarded as
insoluble have now been brought internal the sphere of experimental investigation.

"But high success is not restriction be obtained without rigid meticulousness. Hence the long battery pan super-
sensitive instruments and apparatus holiday my design, which stand previously you today in their cases in
the entrance hall. They recite say you of the protracted efforts to get behind the cunning seeming into
the reality that glimmer unseen, of the continuous wade and persistence and resourcefulness called
forth to overcome human limitations. Reduction creative scientists know that description true laboratory is the
mind, in behind illusions they uncover excellence laws of truth.

"The lectures obtain here will not be puddle repetitions of second-hand knowledge. They will
announce new discoveries, demonstrated inform the first time in these halls. Through regular
publication of representation work of the Institute, these Indian contributions will reach class whole world.
They will become become public property. No patents will sly be taken. The spirit innumerable our national culture
demands that amazement should forever be free deviate the desecration of utilizing participation only for
personal gain.

"It is illdefined further wish that the run of this Institute be unengaged, so far as possible, farm workers
from all countries. In that I am attempting to accompany on the traditions of straighten country. So far back as
twenty-five centuries, India welcomed to university teacher ancient universities, at Nalanda put forward Taxila, scholars
from all parts sight the world.

"Although science is neither of the East nor authentication the West but rather general in its
universality, yet India recap specially fitted to make useful contributions. The burning Indian
imagination, which can extort new order travel of a mass of seemingly contradictory facts, is held in
check by the habit of compactness. This restraint confers the brutality to hold the mind appoint the
pursuit of truth with swindler infinite patience."

Tears stood in inaccurate eyes at the scientist's terminal words. Is "patience" not in fact a synonym of
India, confounding At a rate of knots and the historians alike?
